funny how when a european fighter has a wbo title it isnt really aknowledged as a valid title in the u.s. But williams holding a wbo belt is recognised as 1 Down and 4 to go. I aint tryin to start an international debate just raising what i think is an interesting issue of double standards
you sure? a quick look on boxrec i can see that SRR once fought for the lightheavyweight title even though he weighed in at 157
To answer the thread's question...I think he can do 3 for sure, and should be able to pick one up at 168 depending on the matchup. 175, may just be stretching himself too thin but it's too soon to tell. Even if it is, he's got a bright future ahead of him. Personally, I'd love to see him face the Dzinziruk-Kirkland winner and/or Forrest before he leaves 154 for good.
Yeah, Roy Jones wanted to do it with Calzaghe for his 168 belts and the Ring 175 title. He said how it had been done before.
I think that its really a matter of what the fighter does with the WBO title. Or any title for that matter. The fighter makes the belt and not the belt makes the fighter. Think about Erdei and his title reign with the WBO belt its been a total joke, on the flip side Dzinziruk is seen as a legit belt holder and a real player at his weight, both guys fight out of Germany, both are unbeaten, but one is fighting live fighters and world class comp, and the other........WELL he is merely holding a belt until the WBO forces him to fight a live body at which point I would be shocked it he keeps the belt.
The rules were either different, an exception was made or boxrec is off. Back then they didn't have SMW so SRR really would have only had to been 160.1 by todays rules.
Paul could wait out the Martinez/Forrest fight and take on the winner. I'd like him to stay between 154-160 for the time being **unless Mosley wants a crack at Williams cuz I don't see the Cotto-Clottey winner wanting a fight.
Clottey would probably fight him but Arum does not let Paul fight his guys! lol I think Paul should stay at 160 and below unless he gets a huge fight at 168. Later on he could move up after he's done whatever he wants to do at 147-160 so he can then put on weight properly to do it.
Your wrong, their was no weight min. And anyone that knows anything about the history of boxing knows that Ray fought Maxim for the lt heavyweight title and his weight was 157 and in fact the weight in ray was fully clothed. It in fact was a 20 pound gap between the two fighters.
I said the rules might have been different then. Now, in the present you must be over 168 and could only fight for belts in two divisions with a double weigh-in, and approval by the organisations. It's totally different with all the ABC titles now so don't lecture me about boxing history and act like an arrogant fool.
No you said that either an expection was made or that boxrec made an error. And you find me something that states there is a min weight for a title bout.
This was discussed in an article regarding the Roy/Calzaghe fight and how Roy wanted to do this. Roy talked about it himself saying it had been done before. Maybe I can find it.
well im pretty sure Clottey would, but im under the impression that Cotto gets by Clottey in June .. making a Clottey/Williams fight pretty pointless. yeah right now with the lack of depth at Middle (Abe, Pavlik and Sturm the only real big names) P-Will should do what you suggested .. but I don't think he'll return to 147 as it's been almost a year since he fought there, and as time progresses making the weight (147) will be that much harder so he should hang in the 154-160 range for the time being and take on the best available. which I happen to think could be Forrest/Martinez winner. as Paul already has an Interim 154 belt, why not let Williams fight for a real one?
