If Winky is shot he would'nt have lasted 12 rounds on Sat night.

In fact, what he did was pretty impressive. Being off for 21 months or whatever,,, and coming back to face a young gun like PW staight away. Not very bright!... but still impressive.

Wink will always be boring, but IMO he's still a real tough nut to crack... especially if he can get back to 154.

 

Just a bad match up for a guy who likes to defend and counterpunch, against a guy who never stops punching.

Winky looked every bit 37 years of age and more-so in ring age.

I think his time is well past him....though his mind was willing, it was slow and his body as well.

Don't throw caution after foolishness dude!!!!

 

i have got to say, after listening to all the polarized arguments that have been waged since williams dominated wright on saturday night, i think that most of the questions that were unanswered going into the fight remain largely unanswered now, after.

williams fought a terrific fight, looked more polished than he ever has before, kept his cool, played it smart, stayed agile and hugely busy while maintaining form, control and composure. he was dominant, but never got wild or cocky, never wrote off wright as a threat...a fine performance. however, i know many of you will massively disagree with me on this, but williams, despite his 80+ inch wingspan did not look the natural middle to me. of course, wright is not a natural middle either. having seen most of williams career either on video or at ringside, he looks, to me, most natural at 154-pounds...some guys are most natural not filling out a typical body shape.

let us remember tommy hearns...a truly exceptional fighter in possession of all the tangibles (athleticism, strength, stamina, speed in his gloves and his boots, power) and intangibles (heart, ferocity, determination, focus, inner self-control). tommy fought and beat some of the best fighters around between middleweight and light-heavyweight. he had a heavyweight wingspan, but, in truth, he only competed at a world class level above 154-pounds because he was a fighter of such impossible ability that it carried him so far beyond the upward limit of his natural division which was very likely junior-middleweight.

i also find the comparisons between williams and tommy hearns absurd, to say the least. at this point in his career, williams has demonstrated that he is a fine young fighter with some excellent victories under his belt. but, come on...tommy hearns was a different beast altogether...it is an insult to hearns legacy to compare williams, at this point in his career, to the hitman. i mean, they were both tall natural welters or junior middles, but that is where the comparisons ought to end.

that said, yes, paul williams is an excellent fighter and looked the part of a middleweight against winky, but appearances are not always truths. it remains to be seen, if and when he fights again in the near future, just how shot and aged winky was...how much he was frozen by time and inactivity and how much he was frozen by williams skill and performance. in addition, i hold out giving some of the superlatives to williams until he looks as good as he did against wright against a younger, fresher natural middlweight.

 

Of course Wink looked 37 with how Paul was able to perform against him. It's not that Wink was shot moreso that Paul is in his Prime and stylistically he's a nightmare for even a prime Wink. Not to say a Prime Winky couldn't beat a Prime Paul, but he'd always have issues with Williams at the end of the day.

Wink didn't look slow when he was fresh...he was fast and he was able to land on a few occassions. He was just off the mark from being out of action for 21 months. Had Wink been shot...his ass would have been KO'd. Wink is very much a live MW still so don't get it twisted.

People who are writing Wink off as shot are either new to boxing....feel Paul is in some way shape or form a threat to their favorite boxer or plain dislike the Punisher. Either way their point of view is sharply off.

 

The time when he was good was just a short one, and its are long time history.

 

I don't see how Winky looked bad. I thought he actually looked near the top of his game. Winky relies on either getting inside his opponent's jab or countering when his opponent slows down. A guy like Williams is just a horrible matchup for Winky, just like Williams is a horrible matchup for most fighters. Sometimes I think people just look at the end result and let it tell them what they saw.

I'm with the OP on this one. Winky would school most of the rising guys around 154 and 160 today.

 

People-Winky is 37 years old,He hadn't fought in ALMOST 2 years.He's been a pro for god knows how long.He's done at the elite level.
As far as having a short prime??HE HAD a short prime bercause by the time he got the big bouts he was/or was almost in his thirties!He had been avoided for years.So avoided he at one point fought in Europe just to get bouts!Williams beat a 37 year old Wright who is far from the top of his game.

winky tampered with his own career with his ego

 

He doesn't have the punching power we see in a Pavlik or Abraham. Neither deterred by those flurries he throws. This would make him an interesting match up for Mundine since he didn't show much power in his move down to MW but carried some speed.

 

Winky was NOT shot. He was able to do what his brain wanted him to do and have quick hands and sharp punches. He just ran into a guy who is a horrible stylistic matchup. He's not in his prime, but I bet he'd give almost all middleweights a tough fight.

 

Hey! Always nice to see somebody with the same definition of shot that I use.

Winky might have a couple B+/A- fights left. His body seemed very unhappy with him and the early body shots; he sucked it up, but his neck looked very angry late in the fight. He's probably still well suited for a puncher who shoots at an upward angle or a pure boxer, but a pressure fighter with concussive power could beat him into journeyman status until his body tells the brain its leaving the abusive relationship.

 

Winky hadn't fought in awhile, and had a much shorter reach'''Shot??? Nope

 

Maybe not shot yet but will be in his next fight (2015)
