Referees aren't to be influenced by cornermen. I don't really have a problem with this stoppage, though to be honest I'm not overly concerned about it since neither fighter has ever been a favourite.

If you don't reply in any form when asked if you're fit to continue, the fight must be stopped. That is the bottom line.

The punishing shots Taylor absorbed was disturbing. I think Taylor demonstrated you can be too game and have too good a chin. :verysad

truth is Taylor got a second chance and Chavez beat him again. Taylor would have been an elite ATG if Chavez hadn't beat the fight out of him.

the guy would not answer the refs questions (enough for a stoppage), lou was on the ring apron (automatic disqualification). so how many rules broken would be too many just to give this guy a chance?

Taylor was listening to his cornerman who was yelling at the ref. He was fine for 3 more seconds, for God's sake. The ref was bought.

Watch what happened with 1 second to go. Mayorga hadn't even been battered like Taylor had.

    Watch at the 1:50 mark.

    That was with ONE second.

Fair stoppage, Taylor was done and didn't respond to the ref TWICE. That there was only 2 seconds left or that Duva was screaming at Steele are niether here nor there.

I've never seen one of those Legendary Nights docus but they must be a bit dodgy, all the loons that come on here claiming that Leonard ducker Pryor tend to quote Legendary Nights as a "source".

So? Mayorga was fine after the fight and returned to the ring. With the JCC / MT fight, MT was robbed of a victory. He had taken punches all night. One or two more max was irrelevant in a title fight with 3 seconds left.

The ref is there to protect the fighter FIRST. One more punch could have killed Taylor, and no one knew that better than the third man on the ring.

As it is, Taylor was damaged, a couple more hooks would have killed the man.

Steele did good in protecting Taylor's health.

Isn't Taylor still fighting under some rinky-dink state commission like North Dakota or something? Last I saw tape of him, he boxed, looked, walked and talked like there was some serious brain damage going on. Whoever's giving him a license needs to be locked up for conspiracy to commit manslaughter. :nono

There has been so many conspiracy theories about the stoppage: Steele had the red flashing light for 10 seconds left right in front of him, a Cuban shot him with a tranquilizer dart from the grassy knoll, Taylor's water was drugged by the Chavez corner, an ESPN plot to discredit HBO by paying off Steele, etc., etc., etc. :tired

I don't see Taylor having a long run at the top of the sport due to his style and the talent around 147 at the time.

After the first Chavez fight, Taylor moved up to 147, citing weight problems. He did make 140 four years later, but that might've just been a last ditch effort for one final big fight/payday. Taylor had that stocky frame and I can see him having weight problems at 140.

Taylor beat Davis for a title at 147 but lost it to Espana the next year, a few months before he had lost to Norris at JMW.

With guys at 147 like Trinidad, Espana, Quartey, stablemate Whitaker...I don't think Taylor would be at the top of the division.

I don't think it was bad, just seemed unfair to Taylor whom I was rooting for.

Nonetheless, the health and safety of a fighter should always be the ref's primary concern. Anything else, including a deserved W or not, is a DISTANT SECOND.
