Ali's greatest opponent was his vastly inflated opinion of himself. He was KO'd by his own ego every time he opened his big mouth. The Lord works in mysterious ways, though..............
Ali's best opponent and win is George Foreman. His overall resume is right there with the best of all-time, it's definitely the best single division resume.

Floyd didnt cherrypick his entire career but he has the past few years. I believe Ali's is better also but I figured Floyd was a good example as a modern day great fighter like him or not.
best victory without doubt a physically prime foreman most important second fight with Frazier (set up the foreman fight) Ali's resume is very impressive definitly one of the best in boxing, he was around in the golden age of the division and spanned 3 generations (64-before exile, 70-76) and cleaned up 3 times (proper titles) Liston was underated, had one of the best jabs in heavy history (with holmes) and awesome power when you think that guys like jerry quarry zora folly ellis young shavers lyle bonavena were just thought of as contenders it says it all
Hardest fighter he signed up for was Big George Foreman. Remember Howard Cossell doing the eulogy before the fight?? No one gave Ali a chance in that fight. Hard to go past Joe Frazier and the "thriller in Manilla" as his best fight.
I agree that the 3rd Frazier fight was his best fight, but his best performance in terms of Ali at his best was his 3rd round destruction of Cleveland Williams. The Foreman fight was definitely a career defining fight, and the most emotional win in Heavyweight history.
