Could Hatton won his fight with Mayweather if the referee was not Joe cortez?

This thread is about the Hatton/Mayweather fight, not the Hopkins/Calzaghe fight. Speaking of the latter fight, is it suprising that Cortez was more lenient in that fight given that he was lambasted for being too strict in the Hatton/Mayweather fight?

Its also about Cortez (his name is in the thread title), nice try at a get out though. Cortez was just responding to public pressure when reffing Hopkins-Calzaghe?

So he's not biased, just weak and inconsistant?

I think the Soto fight showed us his faculties might be slipping,

How did I try to get out of it when I answered your irrelevant question?

I would say so. I firmly believe his work in the Hopkins/Calzaghe fight was affected by the criticism he received from the Mayweather/Hatton fight. It's ridiculous that he was even criticised given that Hatton was knocked out.

Hatton got desperate because of the ref, thats why he got knocked out.

    Or something

How is Cortez' handling of Calzaghe-Hopkins "irrelevant". Despite what TFFP is claiming, pretty much everyone in this thread has agreed he didn't change the outcome of Hatton-Mayweather and people had moved on to questioning the inconsistancies in Cortez' reffing style between the two fights involving 2 Yanks against 2 Brits.

If you wern't comfortable answering the question then fair enough but don't try and play Internet Policeman when questions you don't like come up in the natural course of a thread.

You responded to my post by making a point that was irrelevant to the point I made

That's fine, but I never made any points that were even relevant to the Hopkins/Calzaghe fight.

I answered the question, didn't I? I just don't see the relevance. If you believe that Cortez is just biased against towards Americans than fine. However, I think it's pretty obvious that he let more go because he criticised for being too strict in the Hatton/Mayweather fight.

I don't know whether Cortez is biased, only he knows that but it certainly doesn't look good. Seems people are very quick to get up in arms about Hattons holding but can shrug off Hopkins getting away with it with a "Oh, well the ref had a bad day".

At least no ones had the balls to pull the "ring generalship" line (yet!)

This thread piqued my interest in re-watching this fight for the first time in several months. After downloading the Sky Sports broadcast of the fight and hearing the British commentary for the first time, I finally realize why the U.K. fight fans have been so up in arms about Cortez's officiating. That was one of the most pathetic and biased whine fests that I've ever heard from a team calling a fight. Much worse than anything Lampley and Merchant have done while cheerleading for the HBO house fighters.

This is another great example of how commentary skews people's perception of what's actually going on in a fight.

Hows that intelligent? Even his "ifs" are unrealistic

If Hatton couldnt kill the body by the 10th, he would have gotten KTFO, just like in real life

What's intelligent about it? When they fought on the inside, Mayweather beat Hatton at his own game. It wasn't Joe Cortez who prevented Hatton from working the body. It was Mayweather's defense.

No Hatton was holding just as much as Floyd...
