i have always wondered this. And not just any promoter but the big name ones like Schaefer, Arum, Goosen, Dibella etc. Is it luck, do they have to go to college, if so what do they major in?
get fighters under contract, invest or find investors for the venue and hope you clear more money than you have promised the fighters and venue.
Being a boxing promoter only takes a little knowledge of business and a lot of financial support / backing........ If you can flash serious money in front of a boxers face, he'll pay attention and listen to what you gotta say...... Most people will................ Nobody outside of Don King can climb all the way up the ladder of success by bullshitting people early on........ Don King was indeed KING there......... You won't see another King....... MR.BILL
If you don't got money. You go to College and major in business. Try to get hired by a Promoting company like Goldenboy or Top Rank and work your way up. Or you could just be a criminal like Don King and buy your way in.
Heck, all you need to do is have a brain surgeon remove the empathy part of your brain, give up on all morals and find a gullible investor!
To be honest...You just have to do it. I have a buddy of mine that started a promotional company a few years ago and he does both boxing and MMA. He never makes any money but he isnt losing money. I said to him..Mike what the **** are you doing?? You have been at this **** for almost five years and you havent made 10k yet. He said that he was waiting for his "Rumble in the Jungle" for those that dont know, Don King was a nobody local promoter that hit the big times with one fight in which he said that he could get a 10 million dollar purse. If you want to do it, just ****ing do it. It dont take as much as some here seem to think. Nothing worst then getting old and saying man I should have tried to do that:good
