This is a very popular topic amongst boxing enthusiasts and everyone has their own idea. Some say its the gold medal, some say its the love he gets from women, some say its his back round story, some even say its the fact that he is Mexican. Last night I was doing some thinking while i was laying down watching espn and came up with my own reason why everyone loved ODLH. The reason ODLH is so loved is because he is A LOSER. Yes I said it! Oscar de la hoya is a loser. I think in some instances people love the loser because they feel they can connect with the loser more. Oscar was a winner that could lose and thats why they loved him. Maybe I'm Wrong but I had way more to say about it last night... I forget most of the stuff i came up with but thats what i think....

    hmm says... combination of everything...
story, gold medal, attractiveness (is he the JFK of boxing?), JCC, marketed well in U.S., etc. I don't think we can pinpoint to just one thing. but I wasn't expecting your loser tid bid..... made sense ....a bit hehe

His looks and his gold medal and story helped. What also helped him was that he is very articulate.

You have a point. But its not one thing, and different fans will have different reasons for liking him. Some may like his style, some like his background, he fights dangerous opponents (most of the time), doesnt ever really slate anyone, etc.

Oh yea i forgot about that. He's was a hard guy for the Media to dislike...

Tyson spoke like an illiterate girl, Jones speaks like his IQ is 40 with that dumbed down drawl of his, Toney was a ****ing thug,Trinidad didnt speak english, Whittaker is dumb as rocks and they only helped Oscar look like god himself.

no i just forgot... it wasnt like i was like

"OH MY GOD!!! I JUST CAME UP WITH THE BEST THEORY EVER!! lemme write all this down before i forget so i can share it with esb"

    i forget some of it

I def agree it was a big combo.... i think the major factor was he was a Loser though... you never knew what you were getting when you went to see him and even when he would lose he was gracious, fought hard and still looked for the biggest challenges....

as opposed to a guy like floyd.... i mean obviously people hate floyd for his attitude but he is to perfect and i feel the people cant really physiologically gravitate to someone like that

stop acting like he aint lose all his big fights

i think the underlying reason.... under all the reasons is this

hmm says.... well everyone likes those rags to riches stories and heroes/ heroines that fall from grace. DLH is both so that can support your reason walker.
