The "REAL" Reason Oscar De La Hoya Was Loved...

Loved in America maybe.

Nobody I work with knows who the **** Oscar De La Hoya is.

 

Walk, if you are saying people loved Oscar cuz he was vulnerable then I agree. An exciting offensive fighter is always going to get more love than a boring but more successful defensive fighter.

But you compared him to Gatti, and that's what's riling people up.

I like your loser theory but after some thought I don't think it's right.

It would be right if most of DLH fans after a defeat admitted "hell Oscar fought but he just met a better man tonight." There are some fighters like that, fighters who the fans love even though they often lose. But in the case of Oscar it was different - most Oscar fans would rather claim that in fact he won, was robbed and that he had to be the winner (even though he clearly lost like against Mayweather). There was a strong cult of DLH the winner, he wasn't the typical underdog.

 

But if he would have won those fights convincingly he would've been more loved

DLH was loved before, during, and after his pro boxing career, so it has nothing to do with identifying with losing as the thread starter indicated.....


The real reason DLH was both loved and hated is simple and can be stated in one word......

HYPE!

The simple fact of the matter is that most people need others to tell them how they should feel on a matter.....

The media hyped DLH from the beggining, thus the people followed.......


Those that dont love, are deemed haters.....and those are the ones that form an opinion based on the attributes that they witnessed from DLH.


My opinion is that DLH was a great but not an ATG fighter.

Here now and in the future, the first thing that pops into my head at the mention of DLH is "HYPE!"

 

oscar was never great..but he was great for boxing...

 

I work for the Police in the UK.

Nobody knew who Roy Jones Jr was when Calzaghe was about to face him, lol.

There is 1 other person (and I'm talking out of hundereds of people I work with) who said he "likes boxing". I remember asking him if he watched Mosely-Margo (it was about 1 week after the fight) and he said he didn't know who they were.

Sad but true.

 

Why was he great for boxing?

.....was it because he sold PPV, or because the media fawned over a flawed fighter who was'nt ever close to the level of being called an ATG?

DLH's legacy and his rank as a fighter is primarily a creation of the media.....and I dont think thats neccesarily good for boxing.

It goes to show just how powerful the media can be when you have a fighter who only because of his olympic and personal backround of winning a Gold Medal for his mother......is nowhere near the class of an ATG, but is hyped up and becomes the best selling PPV fighter in history.


If the media say's it so, the people will believe it. I just shake my head at the thought that unfortunately human beings are that vulnerable to be conned in such a way that they believe what they are told and not what they see.

 

DLH paid his dues very well, he never backed out of a fight, and he continuously seeked to fight the best.

Too bad other CERTAIN fighters can't follow the print, and seek to fight the best all the time.
