do you consider boxing inhumane?

If 2 guys sign up to hurt each other then to me, thats a level playing field & dam good fun.

If 4 guys jump 1 guy & kick & stamp & even stab him for no reason whatsoever, thats inhumane.

Big difference.

 

For many, boxing has served as an escape from the claws of poverty, death, and hopelessness.

Can boxing be considered inhumane? Yes, you can argue that point.

But it's not more inhumane than other parts of society such as politics, poverty, religion, war, racism, etc.

Boxing is many things; it is controlled aggression, it is a science, it is a rigged business, it is a key to a better life, and for some, it is a deathtrap.

Boxing can be both inhumane and salvation.

 

Joyce Carol Oates has a good quote in her book "On Boxing", can't find the original version but I have the french one, here's a rough traduction;

"The image of boxing is repugnant to many because they can not assimilate what we want to hear from the civilized man. In a society that has extremely refined technological methods of annihilation, direct aggression, seemingly natural, of boxing is too explicit to be tolerated. Dont talk 1 load of ****, both agree & are trying to beat each other using the same rules, MMA is an art just like boxing, the 2 best sports in the world IMO.

 

whoever says that obviously is in no position to comment, because they have no knowledge of the subject. They are purely basing their opinion on stereotypes and heresay.

 

I never consider boxing inhumane because both fighters are willing participants. They're not held against their will to fight *Don King fighters aside* and they're free of will to do as they please. Inhumane would be if they grabbed some dude from the stands and told them to fight.

I do admit sometimes certain rounds can get squeamish. One sided affairs that never seem to end are always tough to watch for me. Specifically if I like one of the fighters involved. For instance it wasn't a picnic watching JCC vs Kostya Tszyu. Watching Chavez get bashed around by Kostya was not fun.

a lot of you make some clear, good arguments that are hard to argue with--like the lacy v. calzaghe thing someone mentioned. the only time, i think, that boxing could be classified or qualified as inhumane is when it does not begin with informed choice. any situation in which fighters step into the ring because they want to fight, because they made that choice, took the risks...what could be inhumane about that? there are those situations and i am thinking of, like, primo carnera here that are inhumane because a person who might be medically disqualified from even fighting in the first place is strong-armed or blackmailed into fighting without making that choice or wanting to. that's not boxing any more than sucker-punching someone on the street is...and it is inhumane. but, fortunately, virtually every boxer out there today--with, maybe, the newly inducted exception of sam peter--goes in knowing the risks, knowing the rewards and electing to go out there anyway. it's the same principle as a fighter deciding to fight if they come down with a cold or something or hurt their hand a few days before a fight, they know they might lose some opportunities or some money if they pull out, they know how the injury could hamper their performance, so they make a choice to risk more for a reason or fold 'em and pack it in for the sake of self-preservation.

 

It becomes inhumane when referee allow things to go on for too long. When one guy is taking a bad beating and has no chance but he doesnt get pulled out. Calzaghe Lacy. Pacquiao de la Hoya or Diaz. Mayweather Gatti. Or most sick of all Marciano Cockell.

Staying up til 4 in the morning to be treated to a fight like Calzaghe Hopkins is pretty inhumane too

 

I'm not sure if inhumane is the right word for it. Gruesome would probably be a better word.

 

I define an inhumane act as action against another person or animal who has no choice in the matter or has no way of stopping the onslaught. Boxers know what they're getting into and choose to do so, even when they do it only for the money, it's still a choice. Forcing someone into the ring against their will, beating your dog, child, etc....that's inhumane. Boxing is a violent competitive sport but far from inhumane.

 

Tell em its a competitive sport juss like ne other sport!!
