How does Chuvalo compare to the earlier Champs competition? How about 5 9in Charlie Mitchell whose best weight was between 150-160lbs.Fought a draw with Sullivan ,floored him ,[as well as Kilrain]. And fought Corbett. Does Chuvalo do better?
It amazes me that Chuvalo has such little credibility amongst fans. He took better shots than 95% of H/W champions/contenders, was often too busy taking punishment to box cleverly. His own KO record is sensational, as are the opponents faced. His own style fits into the Late 19th, early 20th century perfectly, albeit he has more technique than all prior to Tunney. Regardless, Tunney would be taken to pieces.
I think Chuvalo would do very well in the early 1900's. Even though he was quite crude for his own time he would be more developed than most of the old timers technique-wise. And he was as tough and durable as anybody. Barring a freak injury as the one he suffered against Frazier I don't see anyone stopping him. I'm actually not sure that Foreman would have scored his stoppage under the rules of those days, either.
Janitor... stop kidding yourself. Sullivan was a **** pot, with a Vaudevillian record to boot. Its odd you think Chuvalo would only last in the limited years between Maces old age retirement, and Sullivans enterance. Its also odd that Chuvalo never drew the colour line, and Sullivan only drew the colour line, after the Corbett/Jackson battle. Sullivans a great fighter for his day, but his skills are not on par with anything 1900's onwards Stop looking at the historical aspects with one eye closed.
From what I have read of Sullivan,he was a fast aggressive fighter with serious power in his right hand, but most of his early kos were acheived over novices ,and the majority of them were smaller men.In Chuvalo, Sullivan would have been meeting a very experienced pro, 6 foot tall around 215lbs with an unmatched record for durability.I dont see Sullivan blowing George away,in fact I dont think he could stop him.Corbett would probably take a dec of Chuvalo ,but he matches up well with the bruisers I feel.
You mean the freak injury of being on the receiving end of 30 Joe Frazier left hooks? I have a photograph that shows his jaw grotesquely swollen.
Have to figure Chuvalo was, what, a ungodly strong 220 pound iron man. He supposedly put up 400 pounds just a few years ago or some such. Then again he's always been a lifter. Anyway, he made Ali **** blood. Have to remember that Corbett was stopped on a bodyshot...
