Colin Jones - The Welsh Welterweight

I still Enjoy Colins 1st Fight with Milt McCrory, Milt felt he just had to turn up to win against this Pale Skinned Blonde choirboy looking welter, boy did he get a surprise, Milt Started off all stylised like it was decreed in the stars that his coronation was a given, yes indeed, the second coming of Hearns, But then the choirboy turned into the Welsh Dragon, he started breathing fire and brimstone on Milt ...and the Iceman began to Melt...Milts conceited boxing eventually gave way to out and out blind panic retreat as he tried to stay away from his little pale tormentor !

When i watch the tape i still think Colins going to Nail him, and after shaking him to his boots several of Colins other shots are just a fraction away, sadly Colin ran out of time, but i still think he deserved the decision ! The Return was perhaps structured agaist Colin as per McGuigen against Cruz, That Pale Skin did not tolerate that Blazing Heat too well, in a cooler Climate i have little Doubt Colin would of Found Milts Chin and won the title.

Also Kirkland Laing on his night could stand most Welters on their heads ( he did shock Duran ) But Twice Colin caught up with him and on both occassions (both times 9th round as i recall) One good JonesBomb was all it took !

When people talk about great Welter Punchers like Cuevas and Hearns and Trinidad, I will always recall a man who didnt win the Title - Colin Jones the Welsh Dragon.

(I know Don Curry Cruised past Colin, but if he hadnt of Cut ....Perhaps Colin may of sprung another Laing type come from behind..??)

 

I saw a few Jones fights from ringside including both the Laing fights ,he was being comprehensively outboxed in both but landed a bomb in the 9th round in both fights to spark Laing out,my memory may be off ,but I seem to remember the knockouts were accomplished by a left hook in one fight and a right cross in the other.I think it was the first fight where you can see a crowd of jubilant Taffies climb into the ring, the smartly dressed one was a Welsh promoter and was sitting next to me. They had a big party after in the Night Club next door to which I was invited ,unfortunatley I had an early start next day and had to decline.
Jones was a serious puncher ,but was rather plodding and one paced he did not have a high work rate ,but if he caught you he was a good finisher.If Jones had been able to fight
McCrory at home he might have pulled it off.
Colin was well beaten by Curry who was at the top of his game, he stood in the pocket and made Jones pay every time he missed,I think the nose damage may have saved Jones from an extended beating myself.

 

Nah,don't think so. In reality, the cut saved Colin from a terrible beating over a longer fight. I think without the cut, and despite his toughness, Curry would have ended it before the 10th. Jones was to Curry, as Hamsho was to Hagler.

 

Dave - that was the exciting thing about Colin ....you darent blink as you just did not know ! i suspect you are fully correct about the Curry fight, but i always felt that Don lacked that ruggedness of Leonard or even a Simon Brown - he was a precision figher, but put a dent in a precision fighter and sometimes they go all off kilter, most of curry's opponents were afraid of Curry and were not going to acheive anything, Colin was not and if he could of found his chin with a few Jonesbombs ..???
as you say unlikely ...it was of course left to Honeyghan to bring the skills - with attitude to eventually dethrone Don ( Weight problems aside )

 

Any idea where he trained by any chance Flint?

Pipino, Felix and Colin...all first names of some massively pure hard punchers who have laced them up over the last 25 years. Im sorta drunk, so im not sure if that makes grammatical sense but the point is Colin Jones could whack..no doubt about it.
