Interestingly, when Carrothers won the bantam title in 1952, he was universally hailed as being Australia's first world boxing champion - there's still footage and newsclips that support that view.

If memory serves correctly, when Rose and Fammo won their titles in the late 60's they, along with Carrothers, were said to have been our only ever world champs.

Darcy, as great as he was, was always said to have won the 'Australian version' of world titles, and other early claimants had various doubts attached to their champion status.

Yes, just like Mundine he would become two-time. And he'd have won a second title as well.

CHB, with the introduction of Nat Fliescher brains, a reasonable format had been introduced... such as ranking systems via the RING magazine in 1922. Newpapers reporters, promoters, Boards of Control and Athletic Clubs were no longer the pinnacle of a CHAMPS worth of standing in the game.

No longer were fighters foreign to the USA 'stripped' of the title won in the USA, upon leaving the shores. Such as Torpedo Billy Murphy who'd beaten Ike Weir for the F/W crown in the USA. Griffo beat Murphy in Oz for the Title, and demolished Weir in the USA upon arrival. Yet, he never become champ in his day. Even belting Jack McAullife for the L/W crown was a doomed venture, and a decision given by Maxie Moore in favour for McAullife went down in history.

Griffo and Darcy had as much right to title claimancy as anyone in the game at the time. Torpedo Billy Murphy had also been presented with a title belt... typically ignored once he left the USA.

Darcy and Griffo were given the blessings of Nat Fliescher whilst he was in Australia in the 1950's.

Carruthers was Australias first 'universally' recognised champ, followed by Rose.

Fammo was recognised by the WBC.. not the WBA. Thankfully the RING magazine recognised Fammo as CHAMPION. Just a shame it took 25 years for Fammo to get his belt.

Thats where the modern day title bull**** begins with governing bodies.

Although not Australian by birth (I was getting a little carried away; pleased that I remembered Famechon was French;)) his victory over Slavin was for Police Gazette Title, and thus the title was split until Jeffries beat Jackson and then Fitzy.

Peter Jackson's claim is up there with Corbett's and stronger than say a Darcy's or Griffo's.....

Sadly 'worthy of' didn't always equal 'recognised as'.

In the old days it must have been like trying to prize the Americas Cup (yacht racing) away from the Yanks - if you beat them they just changed the rules, again!!
