Good post, and you could be right about the fight lasting awhile. I really wanted Winky to beat Williams because Pavlik/Wright stewed on the back burner for years, but never happened. Now it probably never will. Paul's win was good enough, and clear enough that I think Pavlik/Williams would be a good fight, and that it should happen. The problem is the Arum/Goosen fued is far from over. However, if HBO and Goosen made the money right, Arum's greed would probably take over, and we'd get to see the fight.

I definitely think Pavlik has faster hands than Margarito, but it might not be a fair comparison, because the pounds of plaster of paris in Mararito's gloves had to slow him down. :yep

I'm going to repeat my usual maxim: Pavlik tends to gobble up aggressive fighters. This fight isn't going to be any different. Most people who think Williams can win this fight base their opinion on his work rate. Sure, PW can overwhelm welterweights from range and throw volume against earmuff fighters like Winky, but beating Pavlik with a work-rate takes a lot more class. Remember, Pavlik threw 700 punches in a 9-round fight against a backtracker in Rubio and over 90 punches a round against Miranda. I don't think work-rate's going to be a problem here.

Also, Williams physical advantages are no longer there. At WW, he's unnaturally big, with an almost Hearns-esque physique. At MW, and against a big fighter like KP, he's nothing special. Pavlik is slightly taller and can all but match him for reach. Also, Pavlik fights tall, whereas Williams likes to bob and weave, which might allow Pavlik to jab down and pin him back from range.

The way I see it, Williams is just going to get bashed up. Pavlik will do what he always does: back his opponents up. Williams then has a choice. He can let himself get pushed back and he'll just get worn down against the ropes, or he can do the natural thing and resist. Trouble is Pavlik is too big and too strong; if PW decides to stand and trade, he's going to start eating bombs. We don't know what Williams' chin's like, but we know that he doesn't have as much power as Pavlik. He landed a lot of flush, full-power punches against Winky, and Winky never looked troubled in the slightest. Pavlik, on the other hand, has a serious knockout record, and will be getting in the ring at around 172-175 pounds, whereas Williams might be a bit bloated at Middleweight. Also, Williams is a southpaw, which makes him very susceptible to KP's jab-right.

The only advantages for Williams probably lie in his ability to move and slip. If he can dance in-and-out and keep Pavlik from finding him and setting, he might be able to outbox him. He'd have to show a lot more discipline in not getting dragged into a war, and try and heighten his guard to avoid getting caught with that tree-trunk of a jab. If he can keep Pavlik away from him and slip punches very effectively - more effectively than Taylor, if that's possible - he could have a chance.

All things considered, I see this as an intense, exciting and competitive fight for the first 4 or 5 rounds, but I expect Pavlik to walk Williams down and punish him with his superior power, pulling away and stopping him in 8 or 9 rounds like he did Miranda.

Pavlik gets more waaaay more hate on here than the vast majority of fighters, perhaps with the exception of Margo and Floyd. We've even had guys suggesting that Rubio beats Pavlik. He gets continual abuse.

I wasn't talking about this whole site I was talking about the people who are his fans on this site and off this site. I hear people saying all it will take is one punch to hurt Williams. When Pavlik isn't even a one punch puncher. And somebody said "he should rematch Hopkins because he would beat him the second time around", WTF. He get's hate on this board because his fans hype him up to be some kind of monster when he is not. And even if his hands were faster than Margarito it doesn't take away the fact that he doesn not have good hand speed.

Apart from the normal random nuthugger that hangs around any fighter, Pavlik doesn't get any special praise. I bet you don't hate Cotto, despite the fact that every other poster on here has called for the Margarito loss to be wiped off his record, without the slightest evidence.

Pavlik's handspeed isn't bad at all. It's not brilliant, but it's reasonable. He's got a fast jab, and that's often all you need if you work off it effectively.

What's up my man? First I tell you, and you prob. all ready know that I'm easily in the top 5 Pavlik "huggers" esp. on this site. Now also, I'd like to point out that I've been VERY fair towards Paul Williams (in this thread, which of course it is about), just check the first couple pages.

Now the only thing I want to discuss with you is the "Whites run boxing" thing. I know where you read that, had to be in the Ring Magazine interview a few months back, cause I look for all things Pavlik and that's the only place that was said.

NOW...in that article tell me he wasn't set up for that with the question by the interviewer..:deal

Also, you convienently just used a small part of one sentence that was in a long paragraph, in which Pavlik stated something to the effect: "I had a lot of black friends back in the day that wouldn't get the right breaks....just because they were black. And that is BULL**** right there. But now-a-days, it's like a reverse racism where the white guy, esp. from the mid-west is never taken seriously". That's surely not word 4 word, but assure you it's close...:yep

HE DID go on to say though, if you look at boxing right now, (remember he's answering a "baited" question), there are a lot of white guys who are doing well and mentioned the likes of Calzaghe, Kessler, Hatton, maybe a couple more (without me digging up the friggin' copy) and what about that was really false? He went on to say he hates racism in all forms and it has no ****in' place in boxing, or anywhere else for that matter.

    Right?

i like paul a lot, but i'm gonna have to keep saying the same thing. kelly beats him by matching his output, taking everything paul has to throw at him, and punishing the punisher. the only way PW beats pavlik is to withstand a large amount of accurate/heavy shots and somehow not tire out at all and move his feet. and he doesnt exactly have the best footwork/mobility. unless he gets on his bike and avoids getting hit flush he might be good, but that's not his style and i'm not even sure he could do it.

This is an excellent post, and a reminder why this is a very worthy fight.

The points about Williams losing his physical advantages and possibly being at a disadvantage behind stance are important, and you follow them through to a logical conclusion. Pavlik - Williams would be a big test for both men. Pavlik has to prove that he can deal with elusive targets. Williams has to prove that he IS an elusive target.

All I'd disagree with are the Rubio and Miranda comparisons. Miranda doesn't have Williams ring presence or stamina. Rubio went into full retreat as soon as the bell rang. And as far as the power deficit, I was surprised that Williams rocked Winky at all. The last time he was that shaken up was when he gave Shane a free shot in the first round of their rematch.

Pavlik by BRUTAL KO... and heres why.

I like P. Williams. Good size, nice skills, very busy & he's a southpaw. Being a lefty can be good & bad. Bad if he's up against someone with a killer right hand. PW has a great workrate, but all that work will only be like misquitos stinging Pavlik. On the other hand, Kelly will set him up for a right hand lead, a southpaws worst enemy & it will be all over.

I said immediately after he schooled a very rusty Winky, that KP vs PW will be a great fight...while it lasts.
