i have to give manfredo credit. i really expected a lot more of a plodding, confused performance from the ever-expanding junior-middleweight. he scored an excellent knockout and operated pretty well. manfredo is still dog meat against any b+ fighter or better, but he seems to be making the most of what he's got. all he has to do now is lose 15 more pounds in camp and get back down where he belongs.
yeah. it's bizarre...all those goofballs from the contender moved into weight classes and against really hard, talented, legitimate world class that they had no business trading leather with. alfonso gomez belongs at junior welterweight and will never be a strong guy in any division and after arturo gatti fell apart from age...his people put him in with a peaking miguel cotto...man, that was a horrible beating. didn't gomez watch what happened to oktay urkal? manfredo is a natural 154 pounder and again, not a really strong guy or big puncher even there. and he has, by some sick witchcraft ended up in with joe calzaghe and sakio bika. calzaghe proved he was on another planet it terms of veteran poise, ring intelligence, smooth operation and slickness...even if the stoppage was a bit premature. bika proved he was on another planet in terms of being one hardcore badass with iron in his chin and fire in his belly...even if the stoppage couldn't come fast enough. sergio mora is going to be the next casualty as he, like thousands of fighters before him, doesn't see the jump from junior-middle to middle as anything more than 6 pounds. that jump crosses a distinct size and power and raw strength barrier and pavlik is going to knock the crap out of him. if an aged vernon forrest almost stopped mora out of anger that he forgot to show up for the first fight, pavlik is going to wash him out. i have serious questions about pavlik, but mora is just not strong enough to bring any of them to bear.
Especially with 160 being so much weaker than 168 right now, you would think Manfredo would hire a nutritionist to learn how to drop those eight pounds the right way. He'd immediately go from being barely top twenty to a division top ten overnight. I was dumb enough to think he could summon a big effort in front of his hometown fans and outbox Bika. For anyone who doesn't understand what is meant by the term "walking through" someone, go find that fight. atsch
