How good was Pinklon Thomas?

Good fighter who was never an atg, but would be a title holder if in his prime today.

 

Pinklon was a serious title holder and a great business man.. he was self managed and even managed a few other decent fighters too.. He always trained very hard, conditioning was never really Pinkys problem, it was usually his dependancy on and off to Heroine... He had a pole of a jab and a great chin too... The win over Mike Weaver was one of the victories that he is remembered for, he retained his title that night in a very professional manner , he slid a quick right hand over his jab and it put Weaver into a sleep for several minutes ......... He would hold a title today purely because he was of a different cloth than many of those around today..

 

IMO, tied with Tim Witherspoon as the best eighties heavy not named Tyson or Holmes.

Holmes openly ducked him.

 

had a great Jab and decent power, i met a guy later on that was friends with his family and he went back to shooting dope before the Berbick fight...he was a junkie before his career as a boxer and then went back...I think prior to Berbick, he would have been too much for Holmes....Thomas fought a draw with Coetzee and they exchanged some power ...a draw sucks but at least they fought each other..Holmes would not fight either man nor Dokes, Page and Tate...anyway I am truly tired of this subject

 

He was good enough to make Larry Holmes avoid him like the plague!

Seriously flawed fighter. Would not hold a title today.

 

He had a very good jab, though he probably could have fought more contenders in his heyday.Holmes did duck him, and he is surprisingly shorter than the 6'3" they have him listed as.

 

My favorite fighter of the time. Not only did he have the best jab outside of Holmes but also superb power. Without the drugs, he would be a world champion today.

 

Very good jab and had alot of natural skills and abilities. He had a late start to boxing too and had little or no amatuer career either. His problem was the drugs. Could you imagine how good he could have been if he started earlier and had the strong amateur experience and was clean as well? As it was he still won a belt.

 

haven't seen much of him in his prime. Most of the fights I've viewed were when he was past it truthfully, ie. Tyson, Holyfield, Morrison, Hunter, etc.. I've seen some footage clips of him in some of his earlier bouts, but not enough to draw much of a conclusion. His record looks okay on paper I suppose, but not too many big names on there really. A majority decision over Witherspoon is probably is only noteworthy win. Some people talk about his KO over Weaver as a great feat, but Herc was pretty well past it by that point I think.....

What might have been...

I dont know what chokes me up more some times, the legends making ill-advised comebacks and get beaten to a pulp, or the guys who had all the talent in the world and pissed it all away and when they straighten up its too late.

 

I'm not sure if he could beat either of the Klitschko brothers but I would pick him over the circus act Valuev and possibly Chagaev who unfortunately seems to be on the decline already.
