The most underrated, underappreciated, fighter today! Say hello to...

Do you ever make a relevant point? All you ever do is bash American fighters...grow up.:-(

 

it seems hard to qualify a guy who has made millions fighting on international television as underappreciated or underrated. paul williams may not be one of the most popular fighters in the world, but most of that is a personality issue: he doesn't have a crazed, ethnic drawing pool like tomasz adamek or ricky hatton or anthony mundine that sounds his praises and fills arenas no matter what he does and he doesn't do anything to really draw people in. that's why he hasn't crossed over, as it is.

williams is an excellent fighter, no doubt. i probably don't think he is as talented or beyond criticism as this thread starter, but he's an excellent fighter with interesting prospects in several divisions...that's good for boxing and fun to watch.

but the point is the most underrated, underappreciated fighter in the sport is, by all logical measures, not someone who has so much light on him. there are many terrific fighters around the world who are totally unknown outside their native states or provinces, but who could probably hold their own on the world level.

doesn't it stand to reason that one of those guys would be the most underrated and underappreciated considering so few people have heard of them, let alone formed an opinion about them? think: soviet bloc technicians dimirty pirog and karoly balzsay, oft jobbed sergio martinez, slick, quick polish welterweight krzysztof bienias, undefeated, soft punching but ultra quick, ultra accurate argentine cesar rene cuenca, or lower division champs like roman gonzalez or ivan calderon who are almost totally unknown and little discussed despite being two of the best pure boxers in the game.

unknown and underrated doesn't include guys who are routinely on primetime internationally televised main events after being cleanly outboxed for the duration by carlos quintana...i'm not ragging on williams, he avenged that defeat in spectacular fashion, but it's hard to call him underrated in any sense.

how do you figure dawson has a weak chin? what in his career has pointed to that? i am not trying to argue with you...i just want to know how you came up with that assessment of a fighter who, unless i am wrong has only ever been down once in a flash knockdown against eric harding and, maybe, one other time early in his career. what actual evidence based on dawson's performance in the ring suggests that?

If everyone on a boxing site knows your name by no means can you be considered underrated.

 

Actually, most people picked him to beat Wright. Not to **** on your parade...

Good fighter, but I think he's had more than his fair share of attention lately. I would agree that Dawson is by far the most underrated fighter in America. He is the most talented American, with the best skillset, a very underrated resume, it staggers me he does not get more limelight.
