Cleveland Williams vs Wladimir Klitschko

Williams could end up KO'ing Wlad, Cleveland Williams was a very hard puncher who gave Sonny Liston a decent fight. Wladamirs dodgy chin would be severly tested during this fight and I see Klitschko being dropped at some point during the fight.

 

If Wlad stands off and uses his jab then he should win quite comfortably within the distance. If, however, he elects to trade or gets sloppy, the Big Cat could easily knock him out. Wlad really should win the fight though - it's there to be lost for him rather than to be won by Williams.

 

Williams got whacked out by a skinny, but hard hitting heavyweight named Bob Satterfield. He was Ko'd quickly twice by Liston. The fights happened in Williams prime. While Williams has a puncher's chance he has few wins vs top level opponents. Wlad's speed is far greater than Liston's, and he cetianly hit hard enough to get Williams out of there early. This fight might look a bit like the Wlad vs Jefferson fight. Early Ko win for Wlad.

 

Calling Satterfield hardhitting is a bit of an understatement.

 

Wlad outweighs Cleveland by only 25lbs and is only about three inches taller. Williams would beat Wlad to the punch the entire fight & would win an easy decision as long as he could stays off the ropes. Williams might even have a chance for a KO b/c of Wlad's chin.

Cleveland Williams was not fast handed. He would not beat Wlad to the punch.

 

I like Wlad by ko around the 7th or 8th round imo.

 

Williams is no better than a guy like Calvin Brock, I don't think. With Wlad there is always a chance of a KO loss against big punchers, but he is so far above a lot of hard hitters in terms of skill, his chin is largely irrelevant. He doesn't get hit clean and I doubt Williams could.

Klitschko knocks him out in around 3-5.

Williams is a bit of an enigma.

One of those fighters whose paper resume is nothing to shout about but was respected and feared by other top fighters at the time. The buz from the gym rat's was that he was quite something.

 

Clevland Williams,not a great chin or known for defense,he was murderous hitter who was avoided by many.The man before the shooting,was capable of taking anyone out.

I'd make Williams a 4 to 1 underdog. He usually flopped against contenders, but not against local Texas opponents.

 

This may be a harsh assesment.

He was blown out twice by Liston but he did make his two fights far more competitive than Floyd Patterson did. It is not unlikley that Wladamir Klitschko would have been disposed of in the same manner.

At his peak he was avoided by most of the top contenders which might have denied him the chance to fully show what he could do. He split a series with Earnie Terrel but he won his fight by knockout while Terrel won his by controvertial split decision, so I would not exactly say the series was even. He was held to a draw by Machen but then Sonny Liston darn near was as well.

While not saying that Williams was the Sam Langford of his era his ability is not entirely clear.
