That's interesting. Now, why do they want to change their family name to a more English-sounding name? Are Poles discriminated back then that they have to erase any identification that can associate them to being Poles?

It was common with all backgrounds actually not just Poles.

Whether people did it because of discrimination or for the simple purpose of having a name people can read and understand i dont really dont know.

For some people who are descendants of that certain nationality living for example in the UK or the U.S it is just easier to change the spelling of the name, to make it easier on themselves and others, because of the constant mistakes associated with having a complicated last name. Thats what I have heard from a lot of 3rd 4th generation "poles".. other nationalities as well.

Coach K of Duke comes to mind. He might as well make "K" his legal name.

So, it could be true I guess. I had a grade school teacher that changed his name. Said it would be easier for the students. I don't think the students cared though. "Pollock" jokes used to be common around then.

Awww, look at this thread... back when the Brits and Poles were friends. Relentless, PolishPlumber, Turbina and (Brit-lover) MrMagic all happily chatting away to each other. What the **** happened?
