The end of Joe Louis's career is pretty sad. If there ever was a good boxer that transcended the sport and a real american its Joe Louis. It is wrong how the us govt treated him.
The real sad thing with Roy is that he wasn't completely shot in the Calzaghe fight and came 100% sure he'll win, so it hurt him even more so when he realized Calzaghe is too much and he doesn't have enough left to be competitive. He badly wanted to put on a show, even if in a losing effort, but the show became too one-sided. What Calzaghe did, and I think he shouldn't have, was to feed Roy with his own medicine and humiliate him with his showboating. I'm a huge Roy fan and it was unnecessary, but I have to say, someone had to show Roy what it feels like to being on the recieving end of that stuff. The look on Roy's face after the cut is what made me sad. He was badly beat up, and he knew what's going on. But quite interestingly, he was happy to finish the fight on his feet, all smiles and **** in the post-fight, so it's much better than walking away after the Tarver and Johnson losses, truly my saddest memories of boxing. Gatti and Morales went out in a pretty bad way, and I'm afraid Jorge Arce will follow their footsteps. And I think it'll be another KO loss that will send Jones to retirement. Walk away after Lacy, Roy! Corrales' strory is very sad too.
I'm not sure he ever thought Calzaghe was 'too much', he just didn't punch much at all. The sad thing was Roy could find the target easily enough and would catch Joe practically everytime he threw which was all of about three times over twelve rounds. A non gunshy Roy fighting in the centre of the ring and not on the backfoot would have handled Joe easily.
I didn't feel bad that Leonard got beat by Camacho. Leonard had a 5 year layoff and clearly shouldn't have been in the ring at all. It was all about his ego, and he had it coming. For me it was far sadder when he got dominated by Norris. On a completely unrelated note, I'm impressed how Camacho retained some talent over all these years. Kudos.
