Sorry.... I wasn't quite sure what OH meant. Duddy lost to Smichet on my card.... even a nuthugger could only give him a draw at best surely!
Granted Duddy was guaranteed to lose, however, no one expected it to be at the hands of a guy like Lyell. Duddy constantly struggles with C class fighters and Vanda even had him out on his feet late in the fight. Should have cashed in on the Pavlik fight before the hype bubble burst.
I think youll find the Americans hyped him up a lot more than the irish, myself and everyone else I know was never impressed with him. My uncle said 2 years ago.."that boy?..never going to be a world champion, forget about it" "Duddy lost to Smichet on my card.... even a nuthugger could only give him a draw at best surely! " no he won quite easily on points after the third.
American's of Irish decent do have a tendency to have a lot of pride in their heritage. I think that may be part of Duddy's draw here. Plus John Q Public just wants entertainment.
Of course it is, he is revered by the Irish Americans but the "true" fans over here knew he was very limited and the casual fans bought into the hype, but we all know casual fans believe what the media tells them to. id forgotten all about him really I actually saw clips of the fight on youtube and it was some woman holding a camera going "come on johnny, hun"
Well, it is the causal fan that buys most of the tickets, so it shouldn't be too hard to get past this loss for them. I'd go with, his troubles with Irish Ropes being a distraction. He has a new trainer changing his style and they were working on a few things. How about, "Loew has watched a ton of film on John since he will be facing Kelly down the road and knew EXACTLY how to train Billy, while there was little film of Billy to go on."? Yeah, bump in the money road, but I think he recovers.
Yeah but Billy didn't look to bad from what I saw, actually pretty slick with the left hand low and leading the jab and ducking out, its easy to say "oh yeah 19-7 fighter...bum" but even Loew said Duddy was making a huge mistake if he was taking the fight lightly, and that Lyell was a lot better than his record suggested. But yeah, he has the charisma and the fan base to do well for himself, and hes a true fighter, I wish him well but thinking he was a world beater was never anything morethana dream
You should have been on ESB before Duddy/Smichet. A good 35% of poster hyped Duddy to knock out the "china chinned Pavlik"
Yeah there was thread about that but those guys did admit they were wrong, and deservedly so if they pinned their hopes on duddy.
"Was" white and Irish? Did the guy he lost to beat that out of him? Being white has **** all to do with it these days, anyways- otherwise you'd see guys like Harry Joe Yorgey getting their own threads. Fact is, if you can't get a good initial ethnic backing (like Polish people for Adamek, Italians for Gatti, for example) to draw people in to notice you're exciting, it's tougher to get people interested in your fights because there's still the perception that white fighters are hype jobs in this country.
That's Nannerpuss- I was pretty disheartened when the Cardinals lost the Super Bowl, and right afterwards, they played this goofy ass commercial for Denny's that was so out of left field I actually felt better for having watched it. [YT]4kK6F7t-x6E[/YT]
