Trash talking can be about two things. Hype the fight is the first. The second is to make your opponent want to kill you so bad, that it throws them off their game plan once they get into the ring.

The second reason can only be used by certain fighters (counter punchers/the ones who pick their shots). Mayweather is the best example. He makes opponents so mad that they through punches off balance and leave themselves exposed. Then Floyd capitilizes. A joe Calazaghe or Antonio Margarito could not use this tactic.
