im really embarrassed of the sport i love so much, When a champion is only fighting tomato cans!! Its a disgrace. Im posting this thread because last night i saw Felix sturm beat up a bum from japan, Koji Sato. The fight was stopped in the 7th round. The best should fight the best, like in the old days
The old days? Tell me of this Mythic Age of yore when no tomato cans existed and dinosaurs ruled the skies.
I remember a thread about this. There's footage of Sato on youtube; he is a crude 10th rate clubfighter, and thats being generous. He wouldn't look out of place in a toughman contest. Its a mystery how he ever got ranked and was allowed in a world class ring.
Strums last two opponents, Griffin and Sylvester were a decent standard but both were mandatories, his opponents for optional defenses have been disgraceful. He doesn't seem to have any ambition at all to fight the best in the division. No-one apart from the WBA thinks of him as a real World Champion.
watch the higlights through fight news. my god this was embarrassing not to mention dangerous he could have been killed in there. germany hasnt seen anyone run as fast as sturm did from abraham since mary peters circa olympics 1972
Fighters sometimes get ranked as a reward for winning a regional/continental title. Sato and Jamie Pittman both seem to have got their ranking for winning titles in one of the weakest regions. I don't know who's worse, the WBA for ranking such characters or Strum for fighting them at every opportunity.
It's not Germany it's just Sturm. He likes to fight bums and it's a shame because he's not such a bad fighter.
the best dont fight the best because if they lose, so many people lose interest in that boxer. one defeat nowadays and people call for them to retire. mantaining perfect records is whats ruining boxers.
Wow. A Mary Peters joke reference! Either you're Northern Irish and/or you've got a hell of a memory & sense of humor! (When I think of Munich '72, a rather different bunch of images come to mind well before Peters does.) Either way, that's wit I can appreciate... gonna have to keep an eye out for your posts now... edit: Thanks, TeflonDom! :good I was sure that one would fly under the radar.
De La Hoya may have done this to Strum, remember he whooped Oscar and got Judge raped out of the WBO title.
That was 5 years ago now, if Strum still has mental issues because of it then he really needs proffessional councelling to help him get over it and stop it ruining his career. Anyway, I'm sure he could get better opponents to come to Germany if his only worry was hometown judging when he goes abroad. Seems more like he's happy to use the Oscar fight as an excuse to keep fighting the weakest opponents he's allowed to.
