If Hatton wins he is P4P champ and he will get the P4P belt.

because pacs a 140 fighter now and isn't moving back down. otherwise with your way of thinking pac can lose as many fights as he likes and stay #1 as long as he stays at 140.

Pacquiao is still unproven above 130. So that fact is that Pac's number1 ranking is still mostly based off his performances at 130 and to a much much lesser extent 135 and 142

So if Hatton does beat Pac, it'll be more of an indicator that Pacquiao should not have been considered p4p#1 once he moved passed LW, rather than Hatton being the best fighter in the world.

that being said I think Pac is the goods, even above 130, and I don't think Hatton has what it takes to beat him.

    alright

i'll go back to sugar ray again...when maxim beat him, should maxim have then been regarded as a better boxer ?

i get your point on pac losing as many as he wants at 140...but i am only speaking about this upcoming fight here...i think a loss against hatton shouldnt take away from what makes him p4p no.1

7 weight classes...thats fookin unheard of...and i am convinced hatton wins...and i also hope manny doesnt get seriously hurt...this is a fight that he could get very damaged in.

Yeah, two things; Maxim wasn't regarded as one of the best around at that time. Losses were also less of a deal back then.

Hatton has been a consisten top-ten placed fighter, and with a win over the no.1, deserves to be no.1

If Holt or Bradley beat Pac, then no, but if Hatton wins, yes.

If not, definitely no.2 until JMM or Hopkins do something, and if Hatton beats Marquez then he would be no.1

Not to mention, Pac hasn't lost since the first Morales fight. Does this not carry some decent weight?

right...i have tried to think about this as simply as i can...

you are saying that with all pacmans achievements, going from flyweight world champ 11 years ago up to lightweight....that if he chanced trying 140 and lost then hatton, who hasnt achieved anyhere near as much, and has so many advantages over manny, hatton should then be regarded as better pound for pound...i'm not sure about that.
i see manny going back down in weight and possibly picking up another title at 135 if he loses to hatton...{as long as he doent get badly hurt against hatton}...and in years to come some will look back at all manny achieved and laugh that hatton beat him all the way up at 140 and was automatically regarded as better p4p...

just to add....i actually want manny to win this...as a boxing fan i will be very very happy if he does it....and will be very happy to be wrong....it will be one of the greatest achievements in the sport and history will be written.

Hatton at best cracks top 5 depending on his and pac's performance during fight night. If Pac loses, I think JMM deserves to get number 1 spot.

I'm getting annoyed with Hatton's obsession of being titled "best P4P".

Whilst the likes of PBF (retired or not) and JMM are still breathing; Hatton won't ever be best P4P.

Are there many previous examples of a P4P number one fighter losing a fight and retaining his number one position that you can cite for us?

well...the obvious one would be robinson v maxim...
people will say there were no p4p champs then...but if there was..would maxim have taken it from robinson...

also, if ruiz had beaten roy jones, would he have taken over ?

read my response to this point.

Maxim nor Ruiz were not considred amongst the best P4P when they beat Robinson and Jones respectively. Hatton is already amongst the top ten fighters, beating the no.1 would elevate him right up.

B-Hop was no.10, beat Trinidad who was no.2, then went to no.1.

    Hatton is no,.8

These are would haves though. There are no actual examples that I can think of where a P4P number one lost and retained that position. I'm not sure Jones actually was number one going into the Ruiz fight (at least on the Ring list). If he'd have lost Ruiz wouldn't have been number one, of course, but then neither would Jones.

I asked you why you think Pacquiao would retain the number one position as you said in the post I quoted. Whether Hatton would be number one instead is a different matter.

IMO Hatton goes without a doubt top three if he wins clearly and at least has claims to the number one spot against Marquez and Hopkins. The most relevant historical comparison would be Hopkins beating Trinidad, who was stepping up in weight. Before the fight Trinidad was two or three in the P4P lists and Hopkins around number ten. After he won Hopkins went to number two, and then claimed the number one spot when Mosley lost to Forrest.
