The same sensibilities don't seem to have stopped Bernard 'the executioner' Hopkins from using the nicknames. OMG, Al Qaeda execute people, that must be where he got the idea.

Likewise, far more people get shot than get their heads sawed off, so how insensitve is Ricky 'the hitman' Hatton or Thomas 'the itman' Hearns? That must be connected to current events, right? And I supposed Juan Lazcano 'the hispanic causing panic' is trying to make people think he is a member of ETA?!

Suprisingly enough images and evocations of violence are fairly common in boxing.

And lol @ you thinking Haye thought up this all by himself. Yeah, I'm sure he spent his teenage years studying Carravagio!

I respect the man's right to make money, he's not going to make any money from the stadium revenue, he's not going to make money off anything other then the Setanta contract so why not get some on the side.
He's expanding the brand of boxing - although I wish he'd done it in a more tasteful way.

..it won't change the outcome of the fight, but all power to him.

i see where your coming from and your argument IS logical. but it's just my opinion... and one i truly believe, is that haye is tapping into the shock factor that the infamous internet videos of nick berg and others getting their heads sawn off slowly have raised. everyone is used to shootings as we see it on tv every day. but beheadings for those who have never seen it, is quite another beast altogether in my opinion. far more horrifying and savage.

i could be totally wrong, and haye is not tapping into that area just for sales, but i would not be the least bit surprised if he admitted that he thought of using that shock factor link to get more sales.

personally if that is the case, then he really really should have thought of another approach!

speaking of bernard hopkins. i remember shortly after the beheading videos began popping up and entered public awareness, bhop did the throat cutting gesture and people in the crowd booed. i just think something like this is still raw in the public mind. it also doesn't help that bhop is a muslim when he does this kind of thing!

also imagine if a japanese fighter came into the ring straight after world war 2, branishing a samurai sword and pretending to disembowl his opponent. considering how fresh it was in the public mindset, the crowd would have booed the hell outta him.

or imagine if pavlik entered the ring against a black fighter and held up a hangman's rope? your gonna tell me some black activist will not flip out?

i could be totally wrong, but i just think some of these stunts go too far.
