The last fighter Hatton fought with Pacquiao's reach was Kostya Tszyu

So I was searching boxrec on Hatton’s opposition statistics. Ricky obviously had troubles with southpaw fighters which will be a factor in the fight. He also had the most trouble fighting at WW. But looking for another stat: being very short handed, I was wondering if we can come to a conclusion he had trouble with fighters with a nice reach advantage, and was better fighting smaller guys?

    Hatton's reach is 65"
His opponents on the top: Tszyu, 67", Maussa 73", Collazo 72", Urango 71", Castillo 69", Mayweather 72", Lazcano 72", Malignaggi 70"

Take no-skilled Maussa out, and you'll see that tall/long handed fighters like Mayweather, orthodox, Collazo, southpaw and Lazcano, orthodox gave the most problems to Ricky with Urango, southpaw had some moments of his. The trouble came when Ricky, quick on his feet but short handed was caught rushing in wide open. A step wasn't enough to overcome the reach difference and get in range from outside, therefore he had to jump in.

His 2 best performances came vs. the 2 guys he wasn't forced to jump in and out, and the effectiveness came vs. Tszyu as he never let Kostya create enough space for his own shots. Hatton, using some wrestling, was very effective cutting down the ring and staying in the pocket, which didn’t work vs. Mayweather, who found his range after a few tough rounds and used his reach advantage to keep Ricky at bay. Collazo was also effective from the outside in the 2nd half of their fight, but so far, guys with about the same reach Hatton has had trouble keeping Ricky off of them.

No surprise, Manny Pacquiao's reach is 67", the shortest since Tszyu.

Taking out the speed, style, stance, age and other factors for the sake of this conversation, can we say the shorter the opponents' reach is, the better Ricky Hatton performs, and will this be a very important factor on Saturday night?

Floyd was able to keep him off with the elbow to the throat. he pretty much pushed Ricky off of him. I don't know if Manny is strong enough to do that all night long.

Good points - I was just thinking about the reach disadvantage of Manny the other day. Hatton's a bit stumpy, but is clearly the physical favorite in the fight. I still like Manny though on a late stoppage.

good main post. i still think pac takes it, though i'd love a hatton win.
i forgot that mayweather had a 7 inch advantage, that may be a huge factor.
they'll be closer in, but i think pac will be able to get in, strike, and out of the zone too quickly for hatton. hatton will have a lot of trouble finding pac.

i think manny will have been working on getting out of the close tussles, watch for his footwork to be avoiding that in the early rounds especially.
yeah those elbows to the throat were really bad. too bad cortez was only watching 1 guy.

I agree - this whole Floyd Sr. thing about Pac never moving his head is news to me - his last few fights have had a ton of head movement and angles.

Hatton is tougher than some people are giving him credit, and I think Floyd Sr is going to be the story of the day if Hatton wins.

This fight is interesting, I favor Pacquiao in a lot of aspects, but then I think Hatton with Floyd Sr has the tools to defeat him.

I dont think the reach will have much to do with it, Manny fights the way he fights and its a matter of style, skill, and who wants it more.

He didnt have much trouble with Lazcano really. That was exaggerated. Maussa was messy but straightforward.

Really the point is, he struggles against better fighters and better fighters seem to have longer reach...it's logical, he eats more jabs on the way which wear him down quicker

    Still, he'll beat Pac imo

The difference is that Manny creates more reach by jumpin in and quickly retreats back. The key is timing Pac with a jab as soon as he lounges and not giving him distance. I think Hatton should come in like a bull and I really hope Mayweather hasnt done a number on hatton and tried to change his gameplan

    Interesting point!:good

I think reach is important because the smaller Pacquiao's reach, the easier it will be for Hatton to come inside and work the body...no?:think

If I was training anyone to fight Hatton I would teach them to tie him up on the inside. It is easier than trying to wrestle him off and move out of the way and given his reputation he will be blamed for most of the holding especially since he will probably be doing a lot of holding of his own.

Yeah...but it's really hard to teach someone to do that against Hatton...and I'm not sure Manny's that good at tieing up...he's never really had to learn to do it...

...it might turn out that Pacquiao will have to just hope that his speed and workrate are enough to keep Ricky at bay, and that the ref will not let Hatton do his thing...
