Head to head, overall, is Ike Williams right up there with Duran/Whitaker?

Wow Ike sounds perfect there. You'd never know from that description that he got outboxed 3 times by Willie Joyce, outboxed by Tippy Larkin before he knocked him out, outboxed by Wesley Mouzon, outboxed by Freddie Dawson (and struggled in the two rematches), outboxed by Gene Burton, George Costner and Charley Salas.

You'd never know Ike had 'Whitaker clown-job' written all over him :good

For what it's worth, I think Armstrong and Duran are the two best head to head guys at lightweight.

Benny will see the 2nd round vs Duran. Leonard ant some one to be taking out in 2 rounds at his peak.

armstrong is up there, but Ike Williams at his best would tee off on a swarmer like armstrong, leave him a bloody helpless hulk after 10 rounds.

How about Arguello? I don't particularly feel either one of them is a good match for Battleship Louis, but more people tend to see matches in Alexis.

    Agree with this.

    :rofl

    That's hard brother.

You rate Armstrong above Whitaker and Williams? That's interesting. I'd like to hear a little more about ths, not with a view to a protracted argument, just to understand your position better.

Yeah it was said more for effect. Fight between Ike and Pea would be close.

Not a very complex thought, I simply think Armstrong can impose his will on anyone bar Duran. I think he takes Ike's shots and grinds him down. I think he chases Whitaker mercilessly and eeks out a win.

SuzieQ is of the mind that Whitaker was basically a very talented clown who lacked any real intangibles or offensive skills and did himself in. He sorely lacks the big picture with him as a fighter. He was the absolute worst style matchup (along with perhaps an Ismael Laguna type) for a guy like Williams, who didn't apply the pressure necessary against the slicksters to make it his fight. Typically he was a skilled enough boxer and puncher to hold his own, but no doubt about it these were the worst type for him. Again, he wasn't a pressure fighter. And even if he was, Whitaker was at his very best against that type anyway. Williams would more than likely be lured into a pure boxing match against a superior technician and drop a decision.

Williams vs Ortiz on the other hand would be a dream matchup. Duran as well. I see Williams favoring much better against those styles (not to say that Whitaker was superior to either), or any that would remain, for the most part, within range throughout the duration of the bout.

We all saw what Ike Williams did to Beau Jack, a great fighter and swarmer like Armstrong. now Henry in his prime was a more effective fighter than jack, but he was smaller and less durable than jack which are crucial to surviving williams entourage. Williams will keep Armstrong off the end of a good stiff jab which will really bother henry as the fight goes on not to mention pile up the points. Armstrong wont be able to chase Ike down without taking tremendous punishment trying to get in close, and I think Ike's punches take out armstrong...Theres no such thing as a good chin when you face Ike Williams.

Ike Williams Ike Williams Ike Williams.

    I think... Ike Williams:

    W TKO12 Armstrong
    W UD15 Leonard
    L UD15 Whitaker
    D D15 Duran FENCE SITTAHHH
    W UD15 Ortiz
    W KO7 Gans

Oddly, Ismael Laguna beats Ike Williams. But not in any rematches.

NOTE!: 'UD' does NOT imply 'easy win.'

O dear, I swear Whitaker's legend seems to grow every minute with fans who are blinded by the illusions of whitaker making top fighters miss with 10 punches in a row without following up anything in return. I never realized an ******* cocaine addict would be a fan's dream. Fact is Whitaker is very unproven compared to other legends throughout history, and he did not beat the best of the 1980s.

Against a great all around complete fighter like Williams, Whitaker's weaknesses will becoming glaring, and his antics will do nothing to help him on the judges cards.

O dear, I swear Williams' legend seems to grow every minute with fans who are blinded by the illusion of Williams hitting top ten fighters almost at will and flattening them without taking anything in return. I never realised a man who may or may not have been addicted to custard creams would be a fan's dream. Fact is, Williams was not unbeaten, did lose in or near his prime, and did take a fair few punches on film and occasionally didn't stop men he could have.

He's right up there with them IMO.

I make him a slight favorite over Duran and pick 'em vs. Whitaker.
