Well, the census I referred to was taken by Puerto Ricans who live in Puerto Rico. Island Puerto Ricans may simply have a different outlook on race than those Puerto Ricans that were raised in the States.

Yes, the census is legitimate, but everyone I know treat it as a joke. There are just many ricans who think just becuase they don't grow an afro that they're white. I know for example, plenty of tanned people who classify themselves as white. I too have light skin, but I wouldn't call myself a white man, however, if I had taken the survey I would have put white because that's just the color of my skin. Does that make my race white? (not rethorical question)

The concept of race is very intricate and in many ways subjective. Who is and isn't considered white has changed over the years. If you as a Puerto Rican have fair skin and your hair isn't very course, you probably have a good amount of European DNA. You may also have some African and/or Native American DNA as well. Now what race that would make you is not an easy question to answer. Without knowing your nationality, I'm guessing most would consider you to be white.

Ok, thnx :good my hair is definitely weird  but I don't think I'd say I'm white other than maybe on a survey if that was the best option, normally I would stick to hispanic or latin. Perhaps I do have visible Spanish attributes, but I'm sure I'm pretty well mixed (like most PR people). I posted a pic on the lounge sticky a few weeks ago in case people are now wondering what I actually look like :yep

I just saw the pic. On looks alone, I would classify you as white.

Im on my mobile so I can't pull the link up but I'd say its a fair observation though you must take into account the groups perception of "white" on the island if your light skinned as most are your consider "blanco" or "blanqito" meaning white but not in a euro standard. If your brown your considered "negrito" which is considered a term of endearment in many cases for ricans. I admit this is a concept that is easier to understand only if you yourself are of rican decent. I hate to say it but like many studies they should be taken with a grain of salt. Good research though reg.

The cultural difference probably does change the perception of race. Like I've already stated, the concept of race is subjective anyway. For example, over 52% of Hispanics(Mexican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban) in America classify themselves as white alone while 41%, classify themselves as "some othe race". To me, this suggests that Hispanics in America view race just like any other American. None the less, it seems as though many Puerto Ricans(even ones who live in the states) identify themselves as white or black. In the States though, it appears that they are more likely to identifty themselves as other.

Again I'm not able to pull up the link but I wouldn't be shocked if this "survey" had a good following. This is the problem with soceity, these so called veiws are made legitimate and factual because its "written in a book" or posted on a "website" these purposely warped and manipulated surveys are sometimes used as instruments of self inflicted degradation to indirectly empower another group that utilizes such info as justification for their superiority. Let's conduct a survey here in the states and ask group of black men "what do you consider yourself black or african american" if black is the majority don't doubt the possibility of the surveyor's backlash claiming 80% of black men rather be labled black rather than be considered or associated with the word american?!?! The sad part is this will always exist as long as there are individuals out there who follow suit because it conveniently appeals to their train of thought or clouded perception of a people.

Well if you fill an application for an employment or whatever in Puerto Rico, it's not like they give u that option of choosing Puertorrican race. Usually it has White, Black, Asian, etc... so for me it was like Im light skin color like caramel so I wasn't going to choose black because Im not dark skin color, so I went with white option. Im pretty sure the surveys are base on that so.. like I said it's not like they got the Puertorrican option on applications so for me I went with the white option.
