Its funny how shaving there heads did wonders for Bennie Briscoe,George Foreman,Evander Holyfield, etc instead of balding and looking old....Louis was not the Louis of old but he was an experience hard hitting machine...I always look for a measure of greatness in the way a fighter can beat a great fighter even past his best...an old Emile Griffith stopped by Monzon..Holmes by Tyson....Louis by Marciano ..they may not be fighting the best version of that fighter but its the impressive fashion they win in that impresses.....Evander Holyfield is very old but has been able to hang in there and go the distance and make it close with Ibragimov and Valuev...even at an advanced age if someone like Alexander Povetkin or Chris Areola KO'd Evander in impressive manner in say 1-5 rds, I think we would all take notice, and what is his age 45...even an older George Foreman was hanging in there with Tommy Morrison and Shannon Briggs but if someone with great potential went in and KO'd the man even at 45, we would lake notice
"Compared to your average Heavyweight contender throughout history".Well I can give you that. But he looked very little like the Brown Bomber.Cosmetics dont mean jack **** anyway Jeffries still looked impressive when he ducked between the ropes in Reno,Ali looked pretty good when he went in with Holmes but their bodies encased a dead vitality.
But Joe Louis did give Marciano a better showing than either Jeff or Ali. These guys were near corpses in the ring, Louis still jab and moved, which is more than what can be said with the other 2.
I quite agree, Louis was still a top rated fighter which proves how good he was in his prime not how good he was then. it was a very important win for Rocky
