Who did you prefer as the Middleweight Champ?

November 2005, career threatening hand surgery followed by 6-7 month recovery.

July 2006, KO6 McKart, first man to stop McKart in a voluntary NABF title defense/comeback fight.

November 2006, KO4 Leonard Pierre, catchweight/stay busy fight in contemplation of moving to 168.

January 2007, Zertuche KO8, NABF title defense and eliminator for a shot at JT.

May 2007, KO7 Miranda, KP was forced to fight a second eliminator, because HBO picked him to make their new star Edison Miranda look good.

September 2007, KO7 Taylor, convincingly beat the undisputed middleweight champion of the world.

February 2008, UD Taylor, contractually obligated rematch at 166.

May 2008, KO3 Lockett, WBO mandatory.

October 2008 Hopkins UD12 Pavlik, Calzaghe, Wright, Williams, and Mora all talked about fighting KP, but talking was all they did. BHop stepped up, and Kelly said yes.

February 2009, TKO9 Rubio, WBC mandatory who won a legit eliminator. (And don't say a God Damn word about Rubio's mustache. That poor thing has even healed up yet!)

That is a problem in thinking. Think about what you just said. Bhop killed his resume? It gave him a loss. Billy Lyell REALLY has me thinking about resume and loss. How many people SAY they will fight anyone, yet look who gets put in front of them? Even Kelly's people say that at 100% they aren't sure Kelly beats the Bhop that showed up that night. Yeah, his "The show must go on" attitude made for a bad fight, but is that really the point? He stepped up to the challange so why should he be penalized for it?

 

Taylor's worst title defence was Ouma who at the time was top 5 at 154 and a former IBF title holder. So yes club fighters like Simon and Ayala do seem out of place in Taylor's resume.

 

I like taylor but he is done..he had a nice little run at 160...since losing to pavlik he is mos def a changed fighter!

 

Well I think Victor Ortiz beats Ricky Hatton so I'm gonna start calling him the champ at 140 now.:good

 

I prefer the guys fighting the best. That is why everyone who watched boxing in the early to mid 1980s loved Marvin Hagler so much. He fought everyone and dominated. He really did not fear anyone. He took on Hearns when Tommy was coming off that great knockout against Duran. Then a year after Hearns, he took on Mugabi who was 26-0 (26) when he had been inactive for a year. Hagler had guts.

 

Pavlik is what he is, an exciting, strong, but limited fighter. I dont know how much longer Pavlik can hang around 160 (with his long frame and all). At 168 i see some good matchups for him: a rematch with Pantera, Andrade, a rubber match with Taylor, Bute, and the kingpin Kessler. At 168 i would favor Kessler and Bute over him, while Andrade would be a hella of a matchup. Allan Green would be interesting as well (both have suspect chins) but with Greens quickness and skills it would be a barnburner while it lasted.

 

Taylor does good against Jr. MW, but get KO against guys his own size.

Gotta admit that KP took a serious whipping in the Hopkins fight. That beating is the kind that stays with a fighter for a while, so we can't fault him for fighting a few bums until he gets his heels back under him.

I'm not happy about how he's taking Mora now or that he was in talks to face Duddy on more than one occasion, but MW isn't that deep of a division right now. Lockett and Rubio weren't fights to be proud of taking either, but what can you do.

Once the Pavlik/Abraham fight comes off, things will sort themselves out.

 

So in summation as a CHAMPION (which is what I was arguing about and the NABF/NABO/NCAA/NAACP bull**** doesn't count on this one), We have:

A good fight at 166

The Pocket Rocket Lockett at 160

A whoopin to Hoppy at 170

Mustache Antonio Rubio at 160.

Like I said his resume a champion is pretty shitty. If he fights Taylor 2 at MW and Hopkins at MW he has a really nice looking champion resume.

His resume as a MW champion doesn't have Hopkins...in all actuality the fight is irrelevant in this conversation.
