You guys talk about Hagler like he had jab.....funny joksters. Hagler was a stumbling southpaw. Like I said he made a career out of fighting blown up WW and LMW. Bennie Brisoe and the bunch were MW Rocky types....nothing more. Hagler's reign was one of the worst in boxing history.....Thank goodness for the winner and NEW MW champion of the world......Sugar Ray Leonard!! And good riddance to Hagler's stumbing foot in the bucket ass......

 

Stop slurping on SRL. If Hagler was that bad SRL would have dominated him. Wait you prolly thought SRL won 10-2 like that foreign idiot judge did.

For the record I gave it to SRL 7-5. Hardly a dominating fight.

And Mugabi DID NOT ruin Hagler. Did he take a lil something off him? Yea probably. Ruined? That's an insult.

 

That is my whole point....Hagler was a pea brain who thought he was a boxer. ( The Petronilli brother were the worst trainers ever) Like many on this site they think Hagler was a "boxer". He was a banger, who was always in shape, but he was not a boxer....could not box a lick. So what does he and his corner do? They decide to box Ray for the first 4 rounds....and right handed on top of it!! He gave away the only advantage he had, being a goofy plodding off balance foot in the bucket southpaw!! And SRL made him pay and exposed him for the over hyped bumbler he was.....of course anyone who knew anything about boxing could see this coming for years........The only reason Hagler beat Hearns was not because of Hagler....it was because Hearns fought stupidly. **** hagler was afraid of Duran, a fat LW.........Hagler wasn't that good.

Hagler was not a banger in the way you imply- he wore down his opponents with accurate hard combinations. Have you ever watched a prime Hagler?

I don't recall Hagler saying this after the fight, but even if he did, the fact that Mugabi stood toe to toe with him, forcing Hagler into the trenches, right up until the penultimate round, proves that either Hagler was kidding himself, or he was basing his statement on the fact Mugabi didn't belong in the same ring as a PRIME Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

Which is a different matter entirely......

 

I think inactivity contributed massively to Hagler lowing down some-what. Fighting once a year is not sufficient enough at any level, let alone championship level!

I think Hagler pulled it out against Leonard but the judges didn't & their view counted! I guess Marvin must have been really hurt & that's why he did not make a comeback!

Hagler was a fighter's fighter, a champion's champion. He trained his ass off, made all the required sacrifices, etc.

 

I think in his heart of hearts, Hagler knew he just didn't have it anymore, and after following Leonard around the ring all night, without managing to put him under any sustained pressure, realised it was time to go.

And who could disagree.... the chances were, this once superb athlete would have gotten himself badly humiliated by a far inferior fighter, had he carried on much longer, as many of the greats have found out too late.....

 

Very logical and intelligent thread.This may be the truth,we'll never know.Marvin was pondering retirement long before that fight,and spoke about it openly.But I still don't believe Marvin lost and deserved at least a draw.

 

I don't think so. But I do think Mugabi took some fight out of him, and that had sumthin to do wit SRL fightin him when he did.

 

Hagler was not a boxer in the way Leonard was to be on his toes and move around the ring all the time, but he was a guy who could pick people apart with his jab. He was southpaw and he had a 75 inch reach. His fight with Sibson is a demolition. Sibson barely landed a punch on him. Hagler also had this thing of leaping in with his right jab when he had the guy backing up. Great fighter and physically strong with great concentration. A person could not make a tactical mistake with Marvin, a gameplan was always needed to do well with him.

 

Hagler had his fights where he was on his toes a decent amount of time, or on the back foot.

Leonard could box like that when need be (Duran 2, Hagler), but he was generally more a flat-footed boxer anyway. He was very effective in that mode, and I think his left hook has become a very overlooked weapon. It's not often mentioned among great left hooks, but I thought his left hook was terrific.
