Hearns is my favorite fighter ever but I am hesitant to put him in that company. He lost his 2 biggest fights and Tommy was at his peak. Both were absolute classics though.
But can you truely put leonard in that class? His first biggest win is against a quiting Duan. Then one could say the ref stopped his fight with Hearns early (his greatest REAL victory). after that, with the eye issue, he pretty much hand picked his opponents for the rest of his career. Did he really beat Hagler? Hearns murdered the top Welterweight at the time, Cuevas.. He murdered Duran. He outboxed and pounded Benitez, beat a good light heavy in Virgil Hill, and most thought beat Leonard the 2nd time. he at least should be mentioned with that group. is Leonard is worthy?
Leonard whooped Benitez worse than Hearns did. I think the stoppage against Hearns was a bit premature but Hearns was done. He would not have made it to the final bell. Leonard made Duran quit. I think he certainly did beat Hagler considering Marvin didn't start fighting til the 5th round.
Yes but the guys he fought were peak also and ATGs as well. Who did Duran beat who was peak and all time great? He didn't Who did Jones? Hearns was the first man to win 5 titles and the first welterweight to win the 175 pound title. Cueves,Benitez,Duran,Hill.
I think Hearns is more worthy than Leonard. He fought them all like Pacman did and Leonard did more handpicking in his second career after Hagler. But both are great.
