The problem with Mayweather is that he signed Friday to fight Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18. The move surprised the Pacquiao camp, who say they are unlikely to rest until the super-fight.

"A busy fighter is a good fighter, we're not going to wait around," Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said. "Mayweather just had to wait one day and this fight could've happened. I think he's scared of Manny."

I'll break it down

Floyd did the best possible thing for himself career wise, gameplan wise, and Business wise.

I'm sure Floyd is confident that he can beat Pacquiao, However, Pacquiao is no one to play with and is not the fighter you fight after a nearly a 2 year lay off. Mayweather has stated that he enjoys watching manny fight out of all the fighters, Mayweather is smarter than to fall for that trap.

2 big fights in one year ='s more money than one big fight in a year.

Floyd fights Marquez makes about 12 million then fights Pacquiao makes about 20million rather than making just 15 million fighting pacquiao.

The set up was perfect.

Fight Marquez, do 24/7, get exposure and build hype for several months.
Beat Marquez in impressive fashion and it only builds up naturally for Pacman/ Mayweather

instead of just jumpin right into Pacquiao for short money and more of a risk

you make more money in a tune up/ build up the hype and in the process be more prepapred and make more money.

i don't think mayweather is scared at all.

I hope Pac fights Cotto instead as his last fight. Cotto will have a legit belt at 147. Huge risk and reward and Cotto would take the smaller cut.

Pac is in the driver's seat after upping Mayweather's wins twice in brutal fashion.

 

I agree with this over Harrison's reasoning. Floyd is a smart game player and businessman, I don't think he's all that "afraid" of Pacquiao, I think what he wants is to make a big comeback splash with a big PPV event while still sharpening his skills for what could be the biggest event of the year later on with Manny.

Although one thing I think is that he may be underestimating JMM. If he legitimately thinks that Pacquiao is a real threat to him, a smaller man coming from featherweight, then why would he think otherwise about Marquez who many feel is a more skilled and marter opponent than Pac? I'm not saying JMM will actually pull off the upset, all I'm saying is that the inactive Mayweather might get more than whan he bargained for and he might have a real fight on his hands thinking it was an easy walk in the park.

By the way, I don't see JMM - Mayweather struggling all that much with PPV buys. This fight will equal and maybe even exceed the buys for Hatton - Pac mainly because Floyd is just a bigger star than both those two guys. Plus, Marquez will bring in the hispanic fan base which often carries big weight when it comes to these sorts of events. I didn't buy Hatton - Pac, but I most defintely will buy Mayweather - Marquez.

 

The fight can wait. Let's see him get past Marquez first who is no walk in the park.

What better day to announce your return than on the day when boxing is abuzz not only with the boxing community but when everybody's tuning in? It's smart business IMO.

It's not like it took anything away from the main event anyway.

 

I can agree with your point. but trust me earlier today all my friends were just talking about how Pac went through Hatton and hardly not 1 mentioned Floyd coming back so I do not think his announcement overshadowed the fight by any merit. Yeah Pac is in the driver seat and unless Floyd wins in dramatic fashion, and I mean anything other than a decision then he will play second fiddle to Pac and his accomplishments lately. Hell even if Floyd does win by a decision, it still would not hurt to have another tune up fight and everyone would understand that. But please Mayweather fans keep this in mind, if Floyd wins by a decision and not a KO and we should say struggle because of ring rust, in no way shape or form will he be favorite to win if he goes straight with Pac at the end of the year. So please do not bring that up.

 

I hope Roach doesnt send Pacquiao in with Mosley. I dont think Floyd will get as much credit fighting Pacquiao with a huge Mosley sized fist indented in his face.

I could not comprehend all the hype about Floyd, he has not fought any fight he was not expected to win. For him to gain my respect, he needs to fight and BEAT a few of the feared fighters in his weight class. He is back to his normal self, picking on the little guys. Until he fights and beats Mosely, Cotto, or Margarito (if he comes back) or even Pac, he is just an ordinary fighter to me. His fight against Dela Hoya or Hatton was not convincing to me.
