I'll divide this to two categories. 1. International top level trainers. Guys that train fighters to fight for world titles around the world. 2 Domestic second tier trainers. Guys that train our local guys that fight on the Fenech/Hyder/Myer etc cards. Discuss....
Like footy, and all other sports for that matter, the real measure of a great coach/trainer is squeezing 100% of the potential out of the cattle. It's something that's very hard to gage unless you've trained with the trainer yourself or been in the inner circle at their gym. For that reason results are the only obvious measuring stick, and it's hard to go past Johnny Lewis in that regard.
Yeah.. the question isnt for the pub 'i watch every mundine fight & pretend to care about boxing' punter... its more for those in the know..
How would the average bloke know a good trainer? We say Johnny Lewis or Keith Ellis or whoever, but gone are the days when fighters went their whole careers with the same trainer. For example, do we say Skinny Hussein wasn't good enough, or it was Billy's fault? We'll never know because down here, there is only some much talent & getting quality sparring is expensive. Then we have the issue of the alphabet soup. Most of the top quality have a career of their own chasing multiple options for a belt. To me, if a kid is technically sound, has a good chin, Keeps his hands up & knows the value of a good jab, the trainer has done his bit. The rest is in the lap of the Gods. JMO
great fitness trainer.......not a strategist, not even nearly. best strategist in the country, noel thornberry, EASY....
It wasn't a question of who. It was whether you were endorsing the choice of Johnny Lewis or critisising it. And the answer is....
I'll throw a couple names in that are modern & local to my town (The 'Gong) Bill Corbett. E.G. Shannan Taylor is a solid technical fighter because Bill was a stickler for killing bad habits. You will never see Taylor dancing around with his hands by his sides. Vito Gaudiosi. An animal with fitness. (He's probably the fittest bloke in his gym). He's thorough in development, & excellent in the corner. I'm not saying they are the best, but from my observations, they miss nothing. JMO
Yeah, hard to say what went wrong with Fenech the trainer. From the outside it looks like he might've lost interest and just gradually walked away. Trouble is it appears as though he did it whilst still training Danny Green, amongst others - Danny certainly voices his disappointment in the doco he made. Someone closer might be able to shed a bit more light on all that??
International level Based on stats ; Johnny Lewis - Dave Hedgecock .. Johnny's runs are on the board with the amount of world champions he's produced. Dave is a master strategist who steered his boxer Sam Soliman to victory abroad more times than any other Aussie boxer in the last decade. Craig Christian has had success with Chris Johns abroad also & done some great work with Kickett - Rabah & Daniel Dawson. Active Aussie trainers - in no set order Billy Hussein - Noel Thornberry - Dino Billinghurst (trainer of Glen Kelly & Jason Delisle) - Angelo Hyder - Roy Alexander (Lovemore Ndou's first 3 or 4 USA fights & most of his local fights) - Ray Giles - Keith Ellis - Tommy Mercuri (Lenny Zappa) While he doesnt live in Australia ****** Fortune has experienced as much as any Aussie trainer - Vazquez to two world titles - James Toney - Manny Pac and plenty of other big name boxers.
