Kelly has never been a top P4P fighter brah. Joe had some good accomplishments but his resume is lacking substance...if not for his undefeated record, title defenses and visable boxing skills/talent I don't think he'd thought of as an ATG to be honest.
Nobody even knew who Calzaghe was, him trying to get Jones or Hopkins to come to the UK during the 90's is just silly. And if throwing over 80+ punches a round is slowing down, maybe if he averaged 120 a round I understand but even 80 is great, you're just dense and cant except the fact Cal left when he started to get hot and was scared to get a L. Hop off the mans nuts, it hurts when Pop and Mighty Mouse are light years ahead of your boy Joe on the record books.
No real, strong, dangerous challengers to spoil the party for Joe. It's not his fault, just a lack of available challenges. One of only a few to hold all the belts. WBO, WBC, WBA, IBF, RING. Top 20 ATG in my opinion.
Calzaghe did not win the Hopkins fight. You have to land to win rounds. Fight should of been a draw for Calzaghe at best.
I have never really put together a top 100 P4P to many dynamics and way to much speculation...there is little to compare what a 220 lb Duran or a 140lb version of Ali could accomplish? I know a lot of people like them, I usually find them a waste of time. As for Joe, he ranks alongside of the best 168 lb'rs ever. Personally I would put him behind Hopkins, Toney, RJJ and I may be alone but I put a prime Eubank over him as well. he could have done more in terms of his legacy had he sought out bigger fights, but from what i've seen of him I could not call him an easy out for any 168 lb'r ever. Joe was great, although not a favorite of mine. Unforunately for him he does not have many legacy lasting fights burned into peoples minds that will stand oud out.
I see what your saying but its to put those 4 fighters all above him seeing as he beat 3 of them. I've always classed the Eubank win as a great win, regardless of what version of Eubank it was because you also have to take into account how green Calzaghe was at that time. The Roy Jones victory meant nothing really, although Roy had just blasted out Tito in a similar meaningless victory. The Bernard Hopkins win at the time wasnt as thought of as highly as it is now since Hopkins shutout Pavlik which clearly shows that Hops has a lot left. How would Calzaghe have done against Toney ? I think if you take into account the best victories of each of the fighters Eubank - Benn, Watson, Rochigianni Toney - Nunn, Barkley, McCallum, Johnson RJJ - Toney, Hops, McCallum, Johnson, Tarver Hopkins - Tito, DLH, Johnson, Winky, Tarver, Pavlik I've highlighted the ones I think Calzaghe at 168lbs would win - the 2 I left out were Toney and Hops and I think they would be close fights. (Although i think the Benn from the GM fight could have beaten anyone that night) The only reason I put RJJ, Hops and Toney above Calzaghe on ATG lists is because they have done more in different weights (toney at cw, Rjj at hw) And when you add that to the fact that not only does Cazlaghe have victories over them but all of Eubank/Hops/Toney/Rjj have multiple losses, in some cases to very ordinary fighters the case for Joe becomes stronger.
