One of my favourite fighters to watch in action Bassa is, he had great footwork and was a lot like an early Ernesto Marcel in the way he set up his counters, always moving in and out of range with his beautiful footwork and rattling off 5, 6 even 7 punch combinations before getting back out of harm`s way. Like Marcel, Bassa was at his best when circling at mid-distance, moving in and out quickly and placing his counters as he did in disciplined fashion against McAuley the second time around. The one thing that seperates them is like I said in my other post on the other thread is their discipline and I will add ring intelligence to the equation as well. As an example, I was not all that impressed by his attempts to chase down Zapata especially in the second fight where Hilario used much more movement...he walked after him too much, not cutting the ring and ended up off-balance when trying to punch in combination. With the technical skill he had he should have been much better at maintaining a stance he could easily punch out of. Also, he got lured into brawls far too often for my liking for someone of his technical ability, and since he had a fragile chin he of all people should have known better then to slug with hard hitting opponents. He had a lot of power though and at one point I think he fell in love with it and neglected his skills in the process. Anyway, Bassa had a relatively short career because he suffered a detached retina against Venezuelan Jesus "Kiki" Rojas early in their fight which prematurely ended his career at age 27. Fidel was an intelligent guy though and used his ring earnings to educate himself, and is now a professor of history who lectures throughout Colombia.
i have only saw the first mcauley fight but going to watch the rematch tommorow how was his chin overrall as he was really badly hurt by Dave
His chin was suspect imo, but McAuley landed a brutal headbutt to the temple that bassa didn't really recover from in that fight.Without that i doubt it devolves into the war it did.
it was an amazing fight the finish was spectacular to be fair McAuley wasnt the only one using the head
His chin was not very sturdy at all GPater, but with that said in the first McAuley fight he was the recipient of one of the most violent and concussive headbutts I have ever seen in rd 5 I believe it was, the top of McAuley`s head hit Bassa right on the temple in an exchange between the two and Bassa went down like a ton of bricks and was lucky to survive the round. This turn of events seemed to greatly favour McAuley as he was getting his head handed to him up to that point and after the headbutt he was started comming on strong and had Bassa down again twice in the 9th and almost out. However he blew his wad by around the 11th or 12th round and was finally subdued by Bassa with a brutal combination of punches against the ropes to end the fight.
Mcauley IMO took the first 6 rounds not including the 1st obviuoley. then Bassa took the 7th but got a point off so even. Then he started taking the fight until he was dropped in the 9th. Then he came back and came on strong and won the fight. He showed true grit and champion spirit. Will watch some more and report back tommorow. cheers for the replies guys
It's the first knockdown of bassa that i'm talking about by the way.He smashed his head like a battering ram right into his temple after missing a punch. It didn't really look deliberate, but it's hard to say with these things.
Hmm, I recall Bassa getting the better of things leading up to the headbutt KD, haven`t watched the fight in ages though so you may well be right.
I think McAuley was a pretty decent fighter as well, anyone seen the Jake Matlata and Duke McKenzie fights?
I was going to add that, while he had the ability to show great footwork and movement, he often seemed to get careless and it caused him to fall off balance at times during his in and out bursts. I would've said that, if every single thing was not already covered by the forum gurus Raging B(_)LL and Mantequilla. Oh well.
Has anyone scored his fights with zapata?.Both especially the second were somewhat debatable. I might do that later on.Been a while since i watched them.
i wondered what had happened i seen a punch hadnt landed and i saw Bassa fall. Carpenter the commentatar said what a punch at the time but on the replays wondered what had hit him. I didnt quite see it but Bassa was fairly hurt. it was give and take rounds really i just thought Dave held the ring better. no but ill hunt them out on the commentry on the first Bassa fight. It mentions that Zapata was KD'D and as he was down a fan grabbed him and punched him. is that what happened?
