In the wake of recent threads on John L Sullivan's numerous wins over "assorted challengers" over the 4 rd distance, for $1000 prize money , back in the" wild and wooly "days, without denigrating Sullivan ,I think its safe to asssume that quite a few of them were tyro boxer/local tough guys.$1000,if they went the 4rds.
How would Sullivan a big time puncher do against the huge Eric Esch, over the 4rds distance? Butter Bean scaled around 330lbs so he has over 100lbs on Sullivan ,and he could really crack with his right ,whatever shortcomings he may have possessed in skills, he was very dangerous over 4 rds. Does the Fat Man take the $1000 ?Can he even stop John L?
    Opinions please?
Please disregard the title it should say 4 rds, not 45.!!!

True McVey... plus Sullivan never took on the pride of Australia whilst here...

Looking at Butterbean, its not a picture of health. When put into consideration Eric would have been a monster in the 1800's. No doubt, his health would have failed him by the age of 30.

He's a 4 round pig, but typically designed by the USA for that reason. He'd have been a murderous monster on any vaudeville circuit. Personally, I'd doubt John L was a classier fighter.

Sullivan would avoid him... as he did so many others whilst 'claiming' to be a champion of sorts.

    Hope ya keeping well McV.

This is a joke. Sullivan knocked out a reputed 500 men during his reign doing these four round exhibitions across America and Europe. Esch, though enormous, doesnt have the ability to take on Sullivan, who knocked out huge men before. Slade and Flood are two examples, the latter weighing 300+ pounds.

Mate, your arguement is on par with Sam Langford bringing his protoge' Dave Depena to Australia for some amazing 'money making' fights for Sam.

    No disrespect.

Sullivan may have had 500 defences of 'nothing' during his null reign. Who did he really contest with, to make an brilliant arguement???

Brits and Australians were fighting for "Queensbury Titles" long before Corbett/Sullivan.

Sullivan was great.. a great fighter. But the "IM THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD" dribble is what carried his name. He didn't meet all available.

The entire Era is made up of bull****, agreements, unqualified champs and limited legitimate matches.

So....just because he didnt defeat Peter Jackson, makes him ****?

Sullivan defeated the best challengers available (save Jackson; you can argue George Godfrey, but Sullivan did try on three occassions to pull the fight off) under both the London Prize and Marquis of Queensbury rules.

Sully's legend is part pro and con........... He was a party hardy type of sportsman.... He never took the game really serious.......... Plus, in John L. Sullivan's days, fights would go on for hours because nobody would throw a punch for hours..... Lotsa' boring middle rds were fought....... I wouldn't be shocked if Bean clocked and stopped Sully early...... Okay, let the arrows fly.... I'm ducking.....

The Bean who was 333 pounds for Larry "Old Fart" Holmes in 2002 was in pretty good shape for a hefty dude..... Bean went 10 good rds.....

Sullivan toured Australia.. He refused to meet anyone. Joe Goddard especially. He was touring as 'champ of the world'.

In the sport of boxing, Sullivan needs a true enquirery... "BOXING GATE"!!

John Flood the Bulls Head Terror, this fight was held on a barge.Ive seen photos of Flood he looks around 195lbs tops ,certainly no 300 plus.500 men that is a gross exaggeration.Check out the size , and records of some of Sullivan's opponents, you might be surprised,he fought his share of Middle weights.

I thought the "pride of Australia" was that some of its citizenry are of British extraction. Tough break for the rest of the wogs there, but that's life!

I'd expect Sullivan to do a bit better than 1-6-1 Mitchel Rose did:
