Clever, cagey, tricky fighter with a big right hand punch. Liked to sucker opponents into coming forward and then nail them with a quick, sneak right hand. Unfortunately, his chin wasn't that good, and usually his conditioning wasn't either - so if you were able to avoid or survive that right hand for a few rounds, you could usually get him in the middle or late rounds. Still, he had a lot of heart and was involved in some big battles. I believe he first broke into the rankings in the late '40s when he blasted out Oakland Billy Smith, and was rated in and around the top 10 through the '50s, until he retired. Was considered a candidate for a title shot at times, but was never able to win consistently enough to get one. He was rated at both LHW and HW. His biggest career win was probably the lopsided pounding he gave to the highly rated heavyweight contender Nino Valdez. He also scored an upset win over the up-and-coming future great Harold Johnson.
Don't forget his one round destruction of the top 5 rated Bob Baker, and his early knockout of the young but 32-1 upcoming Cleveland Williams. good insight. Satterfield had a powerful left hook too though. If satterfield had beaten rex layne, a fight between him and Marciano would have happened. MAN what a 1-2 round fight that would have been! It would have been like hagler-hearns.
How the hell Tommy Harrison managed to convincingly get people to believe he was Bob Satterfield is amazing enough, but not as amazing as the fact he actually fought as Bob Satterfield for a few fights....how he was able to get by with that trick, as he bore no real resemblace to Satterfield and in no way had the power Bob possessed is beyond me.

Tommy Harrison is still alive right? Well any way, had Satterfield fought the Rock, I think it would end in 3 rounds or less, after some first round fireworks, Rocky's right hand will land sooner or later. Perhaps Sooner, and it would be over imo.
It's all about the availability of information. Today, you can find all records, a lot of newspaper reports, fight film, etc, with only a very small effort. People back then knew far less we do now because they didn't have that easy access to information. I think it's one of the main reasons that Dempsey was still ranked higher than Louis in the late 50's.
He weighed 174-180 lbs but Ko'd a lot of the big boys of the time #1 contender Bob Baker KO1...Ko'd Cleveland Big Cat Williams 31-1 in 3 rds and dominated Nino Valdes ( dropped him for a 9 count in the 10th rd of a UD and beat Harold Johnson...also had Rex Layne down and hurt a few times in a war that Layne remarkably came back from behind......hurt Charles but Ezzard impressivly KO'd him in 2....Bob was one of the giant killers of the day, along with Archie Moore and Ezz
..alfrancis... a million isn't what is used to be..so thanks a trillion for the name of the movie. i've ordered it already. ezzard fought the satterfield second half of the first round half on instinct and half on survival skills. he said getting hit by satterfield was like having a house fall on you, and other similar comparisons when the fight came up in conversation. i saw that fight and i had to use a few survival tricks of my own to get to the second round. i saw the harrison fight too - which, as i recall, was one of those workmanlike affairs by ezz....just took him apart quietly and without much violence.
