Calzaghe ducked Jones and Hopkins? hmmmm

I didnt say he pursued a fight with Roy between the years of 98-02 as fighting weight asked. He didnt. Not for the whole duration.

I said yes, and gave you the link to the Woodhall situation(In 2000) because you brought it up in the Mitchell and Woodhall dig you had at Calzaghe.


When Fighting Weight said i was givivng the impression calzaghe was actively chasing Jones throughout that period based on the quote he responded too, i said he had the wrong end of the stick.

I assumed he would read the whole thread first. He obviously didnt. But YOU did., so it troubles me you try and paint this picture.

 

Calzaghe called out Jones and/or Hopkins after nearly every fight he had between 1999-2003.

Again. Calzaghe didnt pursue Roy through the years of 98-02. Not at all.

But Warren brought in Maloney in 00 to try and get Roy to fight Calzaghe. that is the time he did. And that constitutes at "Any" point of Calzaghe's career did he try and fight Roy. The plain answer is yes. But Roy refused, a descision i fully agree with, and a decision that Roy talked about in the build up to their fight last year.

No he didn't. I was watching those fights, and the only one he started mouthing off about Jones and Hopkins was the McIntyre fight as far as I can recall.

It doesn't matter anyway, actions speak louder than words and he didn't make the move up to LH to tempt Jones, and he made no attempt to unify SMW which would have tempted Hopkins.

You have to remember that Jones and Hopkins were both unified champs and switching weight to take on a bull**** WBO Champion had no interest to them, and rightly so. Slappy had to make himself more attractive and he never actively did that - until Jones lost to Tarver and Johnson, and Hopkins lost to Taylor. I suspect that's not coincidence.

Lets have a little review here. Roy Jones NEVER beat:

an undisputed champion
a unified champion
a linear champion

in his WHOLE career.

Does Roy Jones have a better resume than Calzaghe? Yes, but not by much and that is nothing to brag about. Did Calzaghe hanpick fights? Yes. Did Roy Jones handpick fights? Yes. During Roy's Prime he was busy fighting meaningless mandatory fights and handpicked optional defenses on HBO PPV. A deal that since they were burned by Jones HBO no longer signs exclusive fighter contracts because they had no say in who Jones fought.

Roy Jones spent his Prime fighting bartenders, off duty police officers, and sanitation workers. He was fighting the Otis Grants, Richard Fraziers, Glen Kelly's, Richard Halls, etc.

Add to the issue that Roy was exposed as having a horrible fragile Glass Jaw and you can see why he avoided anyone with a pulse. Roy Jones whole career was smoke and mirrors. He flat out refused to take risks and fight the best fighters availiable to him.

 

Who didn't want a peice of Jones back in the 90's I heard that Chris Eubank wanted 30 mil fight with Jones ..And Calzaghe hadn't made the name for himself so I don't blame either man for not making the fight ...All 3 men had brilliant careers its a shame that politcs got in the way of having Jones and Calzaghe face off long before there most recent fight .The same could have been said for Hopkins but all of them in their own right were stubborn match makers !
