Rather, Giancarlo Rosi...I could still be misspelling his name...a light welter and welter title holder from the 80's, he had no power, not much of a chin, and had a very awkward, dirty mauling sort of style.

 

Gianfranco Rossi or Giancarlo??? Gianfranco was the IBF Champ.. Troy Waters made an unsuccessful contest with him.... Troy ended up with a broken jaw... Gianfranco obviously had a punch.

Bruno was a natural puncher and was physically a powerhouse since his early teens. It's true that he did a very good job in making the most of these talents, but he could have done more with them.

Some of the boxers in this thread got by almost purely on the basis of dedication and yet still achieved a huge amount.

Dude was welter, middle, lhw and hw champ of Jersey. He had a ridiculous amateur record. He was quite talented, just liked to party too much. Very underrated.

 

i agree he was not the most naturally talented fighter of all time but far from lacking in talent.

 

martin rogan is rising up the list

though he does have some good skills. i think its more a case of a fighter fulfilling his potential rather late in life than him being a fighter lacking in talent

 

I think, if a boxer doesn't have much talent but gets by on learning skills through sheer effort, they deserve credit as over-achievers. Rogan isn't a "natural", either with respect to talent or skill, but he's a hard worker who has picked up plenty of tricks and basic physical ability through sheer determination and practice. You've got to admire that sort of person, in any field in life.

 

Marciano was very talented. He was awkward, yes, but he still landed with enough regularity to suggest he had an idea of what he was doing. He had preternatural power and was tremendously tough and conditioned. He was ugly to watch but definitely talented, he just wasn't a smooth athlete like Ali. Marciano could probably have been a pro in other sports.

 

Bernard Hopkins does that qualify? Its all brains and training with him.

 

This is a myth. Wepner actually had a very mediocre chin if you review his career. he could be put down and stopped by non punchers. BTW, are you still making fun of my claim of whitaker at or near the top p4p in the world when oscar beat him, despite my end of the year KO magazine edition claiming whitaker was # 2 next to jones at the end of 96, and given jones loss to montell griffin in 97, that would move him out and whitaker in at # 1.
