We all know Cleto Reyes are known as a punchers glove. I was recently watching Pacquiao-Morales I and i remembered that Manny complained about the gloves. I know Winning gloves are like the best in the business to protect your hands but do they actually hinder a fighters power? For example Tarver had Winning gloves against Dawson on Saturday. Does it really make that much of a difference if he had Reyes gloves on? I never really understand completely the science between the gloves.
Nobody can tell . . . no scientific research or studies on this . . . but what matters most is how the gloves fit on a fighter and the psychological effect to the fighter.
hmm says... personal preference... I go with comfort. Some gloves have less cushion in parts of the glove/air space so you can sneak some punches in better through the guard than those that have more (ie. Reyes, Grant, Winning, Everlast). Also the different brands also deal with durability. This content is protected
Truly, the effect is probably marginal at best. Ive boxed in all kinds of gloves, I personally prefer Grant gloves, but its more psychological than anything else. The thing is though, it might seem like a insignificant detail, but if the fighter doesnt like the feel of the gloves, his hands dont feel right, it can really throw you off your game. Its like a long distance runner wearing the wrong shoes. Making a fist and not having the particular tight feeling you want, that has an adverse effect, because your hands are essentially what decide the fight, and if they dont feel right, its going to be difficult to get into the right frame of mind if you are not feeling 100%.
Good post MJ. I was also thinking its probably more of a mental thing. I also like Grant better then Reyes as well. I know someone at the gym that hooked me up with Winning and now i know why those gloves are considered top quality. It cushions the fist perfectly.
I find 'pillows' psychologically make you feel like less of a puncher, as when you connect with something big it feels like less of a punch. Reyes make you feel like a destroyer, for obvious reasons. Surely the extra padding on the Winning gloves would protect your opponent marginally more than say Reyes or Grant gloves??? Just a theory.
Roach explained some time back, that Winning gloves (made in Japan) has synthetic foam padding inside the gloves, and the weight is concentrated on the knuckle part, for protecting the hand. It doesnt matter how hard you punch, or how long, or how often you use it, it will return back to its original shape. Reyes gloves (made in Mexico) have natural padding (horsehair if I'm not mistaken) and the weight is concentrated on the wrist area. If you punch with the gloves long enough, the padding gets compacted and gets thinner on the knuckle area, and that makes your punches hurt more. But less hand protection. Reyes gloves also make sythetic foam gloves now. But Pacman still likes the original style gloves.
