when it comes right down to it.....boxing is good for street confrontations most of the time.

When you get into a fight with a Thai boxer,or a good standard kickboxer you will soon discover that the kick is a more powerful weapon and delivered at a distance that takes your punches out of the equation.

A thai boxer can grapple and use knees and elbows.

when things go wrong and you find yourself on the ground then dont tell me boxing is going to save you.or Muay thai.Learn how to kick, knee, elbow and even eye gouge and bite if it is neccesary.

its the street and no rules apply......but then the police and courts will be there to keep you mindful of the need for common sense. If your hood is too rough either move out or get a gun like everybody else.....just kidding....but on a street it is easy to forget that hand to hand combat is not the only game in town.

I bounced for quite a few years and boxing was my main weapon of choice. From time to time i would see a guy take a boxing stance when an arguement got out of hand so did i box with him?? no of course not! i kick his lead leg and hed be down staring up at me. learn everything you can.

sparring is essential for the learning of range mangement and to improve your on the job training. On the street an untrained person becomes an easy target compared to a spar partner.practice makes perfect as they say:hat

Got started on by 3 Muay Thai heads after a night out and while one tried to hit me with a Roadworks Cone, the other kicked me in the thigh it ****ing hurt and is a handy move but i caught him with a right and he was dropped like a bad habit(not proud of it). Also Ive heard from a Kung Fu teacher that All the best Muay Thai fighters are boxers!:deal

Alo I will be starting Muay Thai when the boxing club closes for the summer so I can learn how to kick like that ****er! Ouch!

What makes you think they did Muay Thai? Just because one of them kicked you? Again, it comes down to the individual. Maybe they were all drunk or they had only been doing Muay Thai for a few weeks, either way this proves nothing.

Most of the best Muay Thai fighters are from Thailand, where they are trained from a very, very young age. These guys would take your head off in a street fight.

judo and boxing does seem like a good combination of striking and grappling (sort of grappling anyway).
plus there are a couple of dojos near my area which is great.
thanks for the suggestion. and yeah you're right about getting more sparring under my belt.

i agree with this, i'm a mid-sized guy (5'9.5", optimum weight of 82-84kgs) so there are as many guys smaller than me as there are bigger.
of course i can't take up all the fighting arts, that's why i thought something like krav maga would be good. not many schools though. what do you guys think of these "complete" fighting styles like krav maga and jeet kune do?

    Hey mate,

Check the local Krav/Jeet clubs to see how much time they spend on sparring/pad/bag work.

Also if they have split days, such as, Monday: Boxing techniques, Tuesday: Grappling Techniques, then why not just continue with Boxing and choose a grappling art, and keep them seperate. Never having studied either Krav or Jeet, I could not say, so I will happily bow to people in the forum with more experience than me.

Check to see how simple they keep their self defence techniques, if they over complicate then forget it.

Let me just add in one thing after reading what has been said above by other posters, Thai Boxing is excellent, but.. this entirely depends on the person as with any art, someone people will be better than others. If you did take up Thai Boxing, even if it's just for learning how to use the elbows, substituting, short range hooks/uppercuts from boxing with elbows from Thai Boxing this will stand you in good stead.

Honestly mate, stick with boxing/thai boxing mix in judo so that you know what to do if someone charges you and attempts to drag you to the ground, it will enable you stay on your feet, as you well know if you go to the ground on the street, there is a high risk that someone will start taking penatly kicks with your head, even if they have nothing to do with the fight in the first place.

Again hope this has been some help to you mate, good luck.

brazilian jiu jitsu is the go mate. its the best there is for defending yourself unarmed.
krav maga will teach you how to strike quickly to vulnerable areas and escape the situation but alot of it is pretty lethal stuff. alot of eye, throat and groin strikes etc..
bjj will teach you how to control someone without maiming them. the level of severity is left up to you.

Against unarmed opponent use knife or batton, or rock.

    ANYTHING.

There is no standard form of defense nor a one school beats all. The best thing is to know something rather than know nothing. You cant know everything. If you're talking about streetwise, then streets is about surviving, not fighting.

I do Judo , wrestling, Muay Thai and MMA, if i fought against someone 1 on 1 i would try and use Judo or wrestlingbecause you can win without hurting them, if you do Muay Thai you have a court case on your hands. although a knee to the solar plexis ends a fight rather quickly.
