Solid Point Mcgrain. Liston was very versatile with it. He could use it as a range finder/A clean jab to score points with/A defense mechanism to keep his opponent at long range/ or he could deliver it powerfully to knock a mans teeth out.

but against a quick guy he has knocked them back and giving them space to move again. Im not doubting it as it worked for him but i just felt it was too powerful and not good for setting up combos

i dont think it was as vertasile as you say i think it was too powerful again.

Well my point is sort of the opposite - that it was perfect for setting up combo's because he was able to get in behind it, commiting to the move. But you have a point about quick guys, he did struggle with genuine cruisers who could move - and The Greatest.

Q, who is probably the only guy on the board who loves Liston more than I do will disagree, but I think Tunney is a horrible job for Sonny for this reason.

When did tunney actually prove in his career he could fight with a world class 6'1 215lb heavyweight monster with an 84" reach?

actually after having thought about it your point about Tunney dropping his left could play a major role in this

Suzie ,your'e the only guy who has mentioned Pinklon Thomas,I think his jab is better than Mercer's or Young's,ditto Page ,and even Witherspoon had a good one.Carl Williams had a better jab than ,Mercer and Young ,imo.

I have to disagree with Wlad and Vitali being top in this catergory. Both have reasonably long reaches but Listons jab is the longest ive seen and the way Ali rotated his shoulder to get extra length on his jab would both put them ahead for me.

I do like the overall result youve come up with however.

Surprised Ernie Terrell hasnt been mentioned had a very good jab

Some felt Mercer had the best jab of the 1990's. Regarding Carl Williams, Tim Witherpsoon, and Pinklon Thomas I suppose they could make the cut, but I wanted 20 very well know fighters. If you are talking pure jabs, Bruce Seldon might rate. You could make a case for Ernie Terell, and many others. I could up it to 25 total fighters. Should I do this before I invest time? Tallying up all the numbers after I slot each category will take at least an hour

    Jear,

In the boxing ring height plays a role in the length of a fighters jab. The shorter you are, the more you have to punch upward to hit your target. The best pure reach is a straight line at shoulder's length.

Another minor factor is stance. A wide stance can increase your reach a little. In Klitschko's case, I think their reach of their jab is greatly enhanced by their height. Wlad listed reach is 80" yet he easily out jab and other fighters with a similar reach of 80" who are a few inches shorter. Its much easier to show then describe, but I hope get what I am trying to say here.

Liston was a shade over 6'.
