Because people here like Duran more than they like SRL.:deal He's a God around here and can do no wrong. Duran beats SRL and it's the biggest win in modern boxing history. SRL makes Duran quit in the rematch and they're full of excuses trying to discredit the win.:-(
Except it's not? Even SRL himself admits that he knew Duran had an issue with keeping his weight between fights. Going off a tip that Duran was ballooning up, he got a rematch as quick as he could. With Duran screwed over weight wise, Leonard put on a tremendous showing that was tailor made to play up every weakness Duran had. It was brilliant but the weight issue isn't an "excuse"...especially when Leonard himself admits he used it to his advantage. Now the stomach cramps or diharrea stuff is an excuse.
That's not SRL's fault that Duran wasn't disiplined enough to keep himself in shape between fights. Being fit is very important look at guys like PBF and Hopkins who stay in near fighting shape year round. It will eventually catch up to you a recent example is Hatton.
Who said it was? The point was that you're trying to make it sound like the weight issue was an excuse when it isn't. It was a legit strategy implemented by Ray Leonard's crew. And it kind of is the best win ever...or at least in the top 5.
No doubt about it, what happened in the rematch was Duran's fault, and it most certainly should be a black eye on his career. But, regardless, that wasn't the best Duran in the ring that night. We saw what happened when that Duran showed up. Granted, there are those that believe had Leonard altered his gameplan, he could've beaten even a Montreal Duran. That's possible, but I don't fall for the bull**** about Leonard being coaxed into a brawl. The big shots he was eating, with no room to escape, did that.
more lies from the duran groupies he was not a lightweight when he fought leoanrd, he had been fighting at 147 for TWO YEARS when he finally got the balls to challenge ray leaonard.:deal he wins a close split decision and in the rematch quits, the rubber match saw him lose every round to leoanrd in 1989 and this duran was coming off his best win in 9 years by getting a gift decision against iran barkley. duran nuthuggers are full of lies and excuses but there is no escaping that duran was the oscar de la hoya of his time going 1-5 against the best of his era.:deal
SRL was the Oscar of that time. A comparison maybe would be if Chavez would have beaten the Golden Boy when they first met. SRL/Oscar were HBO golden darlings.
It was one of the greatest wins and Duran suffered for years with the joke of "No Mas". Why he quit, who really knows. I mean, he is one of the toughest fighters back in the day and for him to quit to any fighter is questionable. They are both great and the win should be highly rated just like the SRL win over Hearns.
Duran was a more of a aggressive badass in the ring. SRL was much more flashy and not as aggressive dancing and clowning that rubs a lot of people the wrong way.
You and Relentless are both right. I remember everyone going crazy when Duran would shut down all the clowning. Ray knew he was in a fight. It was a great fight and we need fights like that now. Who will be the next Oscar or Ray. The well is drying. We do have very good fighters and the great ones now are close to hanging them up.
