RAY HATTON admits his son Ricky should never have fought Manny Pacquiao.

Hatton Jnr was crushed inside two rounds when he faced pound-for-pound king Pacquiao in Las Vegas earlier this month. But dad Ray insists the Hitman was in not in the right frame of mind to fight after his training camp descended into disarray. Hatton Snr said: "Richard's never pulled out of a fight, never disappointed the fans.

"But in hindsight, if the truth be known, he probably would have been right to make this the first one he pulled out of. It doesn't take anything away from Manny as he's a great, great fighter. But for me, personally, that wasn't my son in that ring."

Team Hatton admit things were not right in the build-up to the Pacquiao showdown with trainer Floyd Mayweather Snr and assistant coach Lee Beard failing to get along. And Hatton Snr believes the outcome would have been different if things had gone more smoothly.

He added: "It could have been a lot, lot better — massively better. I'm very disappointed with some of the things I heard and very disappointed in some of the things I personally saw. I had reservations early on and it wasn't by any means ideal. I'm not making excuses about the performance but I think the fans know Richard and they know what we're all about."

Mayweather insists the hammering Hatton took at the MGM Grand was down to the Mancunian ignoring his instructions. And the American, who has not spoken to his fighter since that fateful night, also points the finger at Beard.

He said: "You have to listen to your corner, simple as that. And like I said once before, there was turmoil in the camp. It showed up in the fight — but not because of me. It showed up because he had another person training him when I wasn't around and sometimes when I was around. He guided Ricky in the wrong way."

You got to wonder though, why didn't they complain about this set-up when Hatton creamed all over Mallignaggi? Was Lee Beard not onboard in that fight?

And so in the same way Margarito must take responsibility for the actions of his team with the wraps, then Hatton must take responsibility for the decision he made with his team.

There's no excuse for Hatton not listening to the guy he hired. No excuse to not at least put his hands up. That version of Pacquiao beats any version of Hatton and Ricky better call it a day.

That sure looked like Hatton to me. The new tatoos gave him away.

Totally different situations there. Hatton had 'yes men' in his corner saying "your the best.. Aww your **** tastes so good..." etc. Margo and his trainer had a understanding that Margo wouldn't be a star unless he started knocking people out. Their solution to that problem? Load the gloves up.

I bet this is right. But Sr. should take the blame for not being a strong enough leader in training camp. He communicates poorly, and isn't worldly enough to effectively endear himself to a training camp where he is a complete alien.

Senior > Beard by far as a trainer and tactician, but Ricky and him probably have nothing in common, and thus communication and trust is gone. In any case, a better gameplan would have extended the fight, but the outcome is the same no matter what.

I guess they must be in shock. They probably thought Ricky was gonna kill him.

This is the same **** that team hatton pulled the last time he got knocked the **** out. Blamed the ref, blamed the ring girls, blamed the lighting, blamed the ring post etc. Why would we expect anything different after the pac fight? First it was Floyd fault for not training him, then its pacs fault for hitting so hard, then its the rings fault for being so hard.

i think its safe to say, with all this noise coming out of their camp, Ricky is not retiring.

Blaming Mayweather is just ridiculous....does anyone actually think that Floyd would have advised Hatton to fight like that? I certainly don't and I think the blame lies firmly with Ricky Hatton and his ego, he obviously thought he could walk through Pac and got the shock of his life. Mayweather pointed it out in the corner between rounds, what did he say "you should have listened to me from day one"?

That was poignant that was, Hatton obviously had been ignoring his advice in camp. Shame because he'd obviously been listening for the Malignaggi fight where he looked great. He got over-confident and thought Pac couldn't hurt him, and pride comes before a fall :nut

I made a comparison with Hatton and Lloyd Honeyghan a while ago on another site, and I still think there's certain parallels for both their careers. Honeyghan looked pretty much invincible back in the late 80's the punches just bounced off him, and he fought like a reckless idiot at times. Then he got totally schooled by Starling, humbled and stopped late (like Hatton V Mayweather) and was never the same again, it ruined him as a fighter and his career at the top level ended a few years later when Mark Breland stopped him in 3 rounds. Swap Pac for Breland....

Hatton as a fighter is now officially finished. Maybe he should finally fight Witter on home turf before retiring.

Hatton is not in Manny's league face it for ****'s sake. If you saw his fight against Malignaggi it was obvious he didn't have what it takes to beat Pacquiao no matter how he was guided or coached for that fight ! The guy was the most overrated fighter on today's boxing scene.
