I've only seen the finish of the Minter-Sibson fight, Sibbo tags him with his big left hook leaving Minter in a bad way on the floor.
Alan Minter had a big following of NF guys and his "No Black man will ever take my title" seemed, at the time, to suggest that he was of the same political ideology. The trouble at Wembey the night of the Hagler fight didn't help either and has added to the fire. I've never spoken to Minter personally but, a couple of summers ago, I found myself next to him on a Sunday afternoon in Whetherspoons next to Holborn Station. He was so pissed that he was struggling to stand and was being an obnoxious twat. The way he spoke to his wife was a disgrace and earned him a good few disguisted looks from people nearby. After he left one of his group of friends came around the pub asking did we all know who he was and I was the only one. He said to me "Well, why didn't you come and say hello to him then?", I was very diplomatic in my answer but the truth was that he was being a wanker and God knows what he would have done.... As for the Calzaghe vs Hopkins "I'll never lose to a White man", it was staged and agreed upon. Hopkins does a bloody good job at being the "bac guy" to get sales (Think about the "fight" with Winky at the weigh-in) and that comment made the fight attractive to the UK casual viewers who had never even heard of Hopkins. This is why when the comment was made no-one on stage looked suprised by it.
Yes, it was only pulled at the last minute because he had DAF trucks on his shorts. Good old bbc. I've just recently seen it but it's poor quality and black and white, not that there is anything wrong with b/w just that this fight was filmed in colour.
met him at a sportsmans dinner in the 90's. spoke to him after and he told me to '**** off you wanker' or something, don't think he liked my witty personality, handsome looks and dancing skills:mj
Minter fought against my Dad's cousin, Pat Dwyer. Anyone recall that fight? I've never seen footage but do have an old edition of boxing news which covers it.
