My bad, I was talking about the popularity of Oscar and Ray. Your right. He is not the best of the four. People really got into Duran due to his longivity I think. Beating Moore and Barkley kept the flame burning and then fights with Camacho and Paz.

I think the quality of the win speaks for itself. Not really hard to work out.

This thread could only have been made by someone who knows absolutely nothing about that era. Instead of making a thread on something you know nothing about, study the era. Watch the fights of both men before and after these fights, do some reading. Then you will see that Duran's win was worth far more than Leonard's, and that Duran's win was one of the very very best wins in all of boxing history (personally I do rate it as THE best win ever).

  4. A Duran slightly past prime moved up 12lb's and beat the consensus second best WW ever - in that WW's absolute prime. That WW also fought a fantastic fight - and would have beaten many, many greats - just not Duran.

It's probably the best win of all time - not too distantly followed by Pep over Saddler.

    :good

    And Greb's win over Tunney.

  6. Yeah..

    Duran/Leonard
    Pep/Saddler
    Greb/Tunney
    Frazier/Ali
    Douglas/Tyson (?)

They're probably good shouts for maybe the best wins in history... Not sure about the last one - big upset.. Not sure if it's a top 5... Can't think of a 5th off the top of my head though.

The win is rated high for a few reasons.........
-who he beat and how he beat him
-gave the all-american boy his first lost
-where Duran stood historically at the time of the victory (see below)

    Duran: Born June 16, 1951
    Beat Leonard: 06-20-1980
    Won: WBC Welterweight title
Turned pro in 1968 (12 yr. vet)

    After win:
    29-30yrs old
    71-1 record.
-If he had retired after that win, he would have been considered one of the top 2 greatest fighters of all time (w/ Robinson).

    :lol::lol::lol: "Utter tripe"!

I haven't heard a phrase like that in a long time! Brilliant though.

I can't remember that thread very well, so I had forgotten you were a contributor.

Yeah, I know what you mean. We all get so distracted and worked up arguing about nothing with idiots and waste so much time doing so when there are real threads to be enjoyed.

  10. Rupert Giles...

His work should have inspired legends... Instead... He was made to be ridiculed...

    Dear Lord.....

that was a great win at that time but it can be said a fluke as leonard was not at his best at that time. he made a wrong game plan and set the record straight in the rematch...

how about quintana's win over williams..williams set the record straight in the rematch on who is really the better man..same as lewis-rahman

  12. Leonard wasn't at his best? In what way - precisely?

Duran beat Leonard, when both were at their best. Leonard won when Duran was having weight issues. Pac is over-rated.
