Yeah, yeah...if you've never watched him before or if you're just a hater for the sake of hating, can the stock criticisms. Blah blah, he's too inactive, no killer instinct, whatever.

If you've been following the guy for more than a couple of fights, this was a very promising performance. Best shape he's come in that I've seen. Showed a whole lot more in his arsenal than the vaunted jab. Those lead rights were nasty. I wouldn't even say yet that he doesn't have one-punch power. At this point it's reasonable to think he just doesn't have experience stopping guys, so the endgame isn't going to be smooth while he's figuring out how to take out the better opposition he seems confident about taking on now - opposition that will force him to show and refine more of this more aggressive boxer-puncher style than the slick painter we've seen.

A couple more fights like this, and Johnson will be ready to knock out Cristobal Overrated as a springboard to bigger and better things. :good

Nice job for KJ. I thought he looked like a combo of James Toney, Glenn Johnson and Evander Holyfield. Nice job. Good fight. Vargas needs to go back to the drawing board. Another loss like that he may have to hang them up though. Still I appreciate his efforts.

He's crap, and I've seen quite a few of his fights. He's sloppy, lazy, and doesn't have a lot of pop.

I, too, came away impressed. The powerful appearance of his various punches do belie the paultry knockout numbers in his record. It's a shame that Johnson seemingly needs a higher level of opposition to bring out this side of him, but I'd rather him respond in kind to better fighters than blow out bums and not adjust accordingly when the competition improves.

Vargas had relatively good handspeed and was certainly pressing the action until his ear began to bother him. Nevertheless, Johnson did a good job slipping shots, leaning out of range, or doing enough to make sure his shots weren't landing with full effectiveness. This subtle defensive skill was just as good to see as his welcome display of aggression.

No, he can punch properly, and he's crafty... he's just lazy and thus sloppy a lot... he get's hit a lot, and he kind of tries to do that whole roll with the punches/James Toney thing.. but he's not that good at it.

He just comes acrossed as sloppy.

He did look better tonight than he did before, he was more active. He still gave away rounds to Vargas, and he shouldn't have.

Why are you expecting him to turn into Cassius Clay overnight, if you've seen him before and knew what to expect (and thus should have had your expectations exceeded)? How can you not objectively acknowledge tonight's performance as a HUGE step forward in his progress, even as someone who generally dislikes his style? :huh

I thought the left hooks where doing more dammage.

His jab is his best punch though, he should use it more.

So if this is active for him how inactive was he?

He did improve, a bit.. he looked better tonight then in the past, but then Vargas wasn't exactly putting up much but workrate, he had no power.

Yet because a far less talented meathead like Arreola swings for the fences, his shitty ass ineffective aggression is rewarded with praise (and even whispers of "Klitschko Killer" :rofl) on account of his more palatable style grabbing folks by the short and curlies? I don't understand how you can look at the field of current heavies and say Johnson's "horrible", "crap", etc. when he's clearly better - even in his middle stages of development - than at least 90% of those who stink up any televised event they're commissioned for, and he's shown a willingness to come in shape unlike about 99.5% of them?

Yeah, his left hooks were devastating. Snapped that kids head back more than a couple of times. Along with that jab, those are two good punches in his arsenal. Don't know if he can stay in there with Arreola right now, but a fight or two from now would be ok. Meanwhile, Vargas' management made a big mistake bringing him in on only 9 days notice. Too big a jump up.

Pulling straight back with his arms flailing was troubling. And as fun to watch as those bombs were, he was wide open to being countered himself at least five or six times. Not going to the body when Vargas was covering up is another nitpick.

It was strange seeing him go into brawler mode, but less shocking than Spinks a couple weeks back, for obvious reasons. Overall, I liked how comfortable he looked in there though.

Good performance, but I'm not hailing him as a savior or anything. Arreola probably outworks him, and I give him a live chance at beating Chambers.
