I don't know if anyone else has noticed but I surely have noticed that the last two IBF Welterweight Champions have been forced to give up their belt. In both instances they were fighters who were destined to have a unification showdown with Miguel Cotto. The last champ Joshua Clottey is now facing Cotto in what should have been a unification of the IBF and WBO welterweight titles. His immediate predecessor, Antonio Margarito, faced Cotto in what should have been a unification of the WBA and IBF welterweight titles. In both instances only Cotto's titles (former WBA and current WBO) are on the line. Apparently, they are more interested in mandatory defenses rather than one unified and undisputed welterweight champions. Does anybody else agree that the IBF at least in this weight class is just playing BS to get their money and in no way help to clarify the welterweight division? Comment on this.
The IBF didn't strip Margo. Arum made Margo agree to vacate it so that Clottey didn't have to wait for his shot. The IBF was willing to let Clottey unify with Cotto. However, Cotto didn't get his paperwork in on time so Clottey vacated instead of fighting his mando.
Well... yeah. Sanctioning bodies milk all they can out of championship fees. Hence the umpteen champions crammed into the same weight class and BS mandatories to keep a cash cow in place as long as possible. The last time a bunch of forcibly vacated champions sued, the bodies had to make individual concessions to said boxers to avoid bankruptcy. If a bunch sue now and play out the settlement process as long as possible, we might get some long-needed reform... but I wouldn't bet on it. Gotta go... defending my Super-Duper Interim Champion Emeritus in Retirement of All Time belt against a 0-45 mandatory tonight. :bbb
does anyone know if Juan Urango has to vacate his IBF light welterweight championship since hes fighting Andre Berto for a WBC welterweight belt?
No.... Different weight class.... Secondly, Randal Bailey just won the title eliminator and Urango is fighting at the end of the month, so there is time to make this fight...
