Four Kings http://www.amazon.co.uk/Four-Kings-Leonard-Hagler-Hearns/dp/1845963598 I brought this book today. About the legendary stories of Duran, Leonard, Hagler and Hearns. I was born 1980 and didn't get into boxing till mid-90's, so i missed this great era in boxing. Really looking forward learning about this time. Anyone read it? This content is protected
Looks pretty damn good. Might consider getting it. I was also born in the 80's but my dad had a huge collection of fights so I got to watch all of the great fights between these four. (Funny how I thought Duran was a scrub after I first saw SRL - Duran I and Hearns-Duran at first).
I read it and really liked it. Every now and then it is hard to follow the author's direction, but once you get the hang of his style, it is fine. I have heard some negative comments about this book, seeming to imply the author has a boring narrative style, but I disagree. Also, no negative comment ever faulted the accuracy. If, at the very least, you are looking for a good summary of these 4 fighters, this is a great book for that. Enjoy!
I like the way the author goes off on little tangents about some of the "lesser" figures around boxing at that time.
I really liked the book. I read also Duran's biography, but I would recommend more Four Kings, because it includes a lot of references from the biography. A great read.
A book is coming out on Thomas Hearns. It's written by Brian Hughes, who also wrote biography's on Pep and Robinson.
I haven't read it, but I'd like to. It's great that these guys are being recognized as a group. It's like Frazier, Ali, Foreman and Norton.
Got thought the first chapter 'In The Begginning..' this morning. One bit that made me laugh. Duran just KO'd Nicaraguan favourite Pedro (El Toro) Mendoza in the 1st round of the non-title bout in Nicaragua in 1975. Al Goodman(who was Don King's publist) was watching with Wilfredo Gomez. Goodman recounts "Some woman, I think it was Mendoza's wife, jumped in the ring after and made a beeline for Duran" "He just whirled around and flattened the broad with a right hand, better than the one he starched Mendoza with." "The thing about it was, there was nothing contrived about any of it." Goodman recalled three decades later. "Some guys try to create an image by acting like some kind of animal, but not Duran. He actually was a ****ing beast!" :rofl anyway off to read some more. :hi:
hey robbi. just wanted to ask about the picture you got on your avatar. wow. Dejesus/Duran if i'm not mistaken? powerful picture
Nice .. 10-15 years from now they can come out with another book featuring Pacquiao-Barrera-Morales-Marquez
Its too bad Hamed retired or else we would have added him there (either as a victim or a legit contender). I also lament the fact that we never got to see Marquez vs. Morales :-( Anywho back on topic, that pic with Duran and De Jesus is some powerful stuff. Before this everyone considered Duran to be some sort of Savage. Him hugging De Jesus when everyone knew so little about AIDS was just something else to behold.
Well, just finished reading Four Kings. Cracking book, that i really enjoyed reading. As i said in the first post, i was too young to remember this era of boxing, so it was good to learn about Duran, Leonard, Hearns and Hagler. Highly recommend it to any boxing fan :good
