Ward shows his stuff: The next SMW King

He should have had a point taken away for excessive holding though.

 

Heavy hands aren't always necessary for success but in today's super middleweight division I believe they are pretty important.

Ward was effective in much the same way Hopkins is effective; scoring points with well placed shots that usually don't cause much damage, using his feet well when on the outside, and holding and roughing up Miranda on the inside, all while making himself a difficult target (a skill few other fighters at 168 have).

The problem here is that tonight he relied heavily on his ability to outmuscle Miranda on the inside, which he wouldn't be able to do against most of the elite at 168. Also he benefited greatly from Miranda's inability to set up his power punches, making it REALLY easy to get in and out without getting hit, something he wouldn't be able to count on against Bute or Kessler.

Don't get me wrong, I think Ward is really skilled and will frustrate the hell out of any opponent, but that doesn't make him a King just yet.

 

Even the way that he was holding at times was skillful. Miranda tried to use his head several times as a weapon and Ward even stopped him from doing that by putting his forearm on Miranda's neck and not allowing him to headbutt him on the inside...Small things like that seem to go un seen with this stick your chin out and see who can take the most before falling down mindset that fans have know.

Very skilled fighter.

Why is that so funny??? have you seen Ward fight??? I bet not.

 

Kessler is no Miranda, not at all. Why couldn't he stop Miranda like Pavlik and Abraham. Why did he hold so much?

 

Eh, Ward won tonight and employed a very effective fight plan, but that type of fighting isn't going to hold up against the best fighters of the division IMO. Ward is the typical boxer who does whatever he can to win whether it's prety or not. That's the way he won his gold medal and that's the way he won toinght.

He might able to win a title in the near future, I cou;d see that, but I just don't think he's good enough to challenge the absolute best of the division and beccome any kind of dominant champion.

 

If you say so my man... I just don't see Ward as anything special. He does nothing exceptional in the ring and I doubt those tactics he used tonight would work on more powerful super middleweights such as Froch and Andrade. I just don't see him having the skills nor the power to keep those guys off of him. Decent fighter, but nothing great IMO otherwise Miranda wouldn't have made it the distance.

Although I'd like to see him in there against Dirrell next.
